As a Teacher Aide, I assist the lead special education teacher with instruction of students in a self-contained 6:1:1 applied behavior analysis (ABA) classroom. Alongside the Lead Teacher and other Teacher Aide, I conduct Discrete Trial Training (DTT) with students on topics of math, phonics, spelling, reading, speech and language, and daily living skills. I enjoy supporting students in the growth of their social skills by modeling conversation and encouraging teamwork amongst general education and special education students during structured and unstructured teaching periods.

In this role, I assisted teachers of grades kindergarten through third grade by conducting weekly reading fluency assessments to assess students’ phonic awareness and comprehension progress. Additionally, I was tasked with leading small math instructional groups of 3 – 5 students to reinforce classroom lessons. Further, I supported students during independent work periods by observing behaviors to see which students need assistance as well as provided additional instruction or clarification as needed.

In this role I was entrusted to supervise the children of one family six days per week who are between the ages 5 – 14 years old, supporting them through key developmental years of their childhood. I was responsible for assisting children with clarification and completion of homework assignments and transportation to and from sports games and practices, as well as extracurricular classes. Further, I provided additional help with tasks around the home as needed.

In this role, I worked on the School and Community Programs team to aid in their goal of bringing mental health services to children in NYC schools. Alongside other Behavioral Technicians, I helped to prepare materials for the delivery of in-school mental health services. Additionally, I collected pre- and post- intervention data from families while conducting in-school coding of children's behavior. This role allowed for the opportunity to assist a clinician on our team in leading a behavior management group at a NYS DOE school.

In this role, I collaborated with other Program Assistants to complete material preparation for in-school services, data collection from families served, and on other assignments as required. Further, I co-lead two mental health curriculums, Detective Club and Mental Health Skill Building, with a clinician from the Behavior team at a NYS DOE school. I assisted team clinicians on virtual Educator and Caregiver workshops by collecting and answering participant questions for the clinician, providing the PowerPoint shared by the clinician to participants, and collecting feedback from the survey participants completed to share with the clinician. As a Program Assistant, I also had the opportunity to join Behavior Team, School and Community Programs Team, and company-wide meetings.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, I created and designed a six-week summer day camp for a group of five children. For the summers of 2020 and 2021, I and a co-worker led the children through sports, arts and crafts, cooking, water play and age-appropriate educational activities.

I worked with a camper one-on-one who has special needs as a shadow. I participated in activities along with the camper and communicated regularly with camper’s parents and behaviorists as well as Inclusion Program director and assistant director to ensure an enjoyable experience for the camper.
