Copy EditorSlack Inc. Jan 2006 - Aug 2008Thorofare, Nj, UsAs the first copy editor for the specialty medicine newspapers at SLACK Incorporated, I played a significant role in determining the duties of the copy editing group. Initially, we checked for basic spelling and grammar. Soon duties grew to include writing headlines, fact-checking, mentoring new writers and developing and enforcing adherence to a company style guide. The style guide is perhaps my best professional achievement. As the primary author of this guide, I researched Associated Press, American Medical Association and American Psychological Association rules for publication as well as general grammar guidebooks. I synthesized these rules to create an easy to follow writing and editing guide for our medical information publications.Additionally, I enjoyed mentoring new copy editors: teaching in-house style, helping to improve editing skills, ensure understanding and fulfillment of copy editor's responsibilities, guide through inner workings of the company, assist in setting career goals within the company, and help prepare for advancement. -
