The Connecticut Young Worker Health & Safety Team is comprised of professionals representing lead state agencies as well as federal programs and organizations whose work includes positive youth development in our schools, communities and workplaces. Members include representatives from the CT State Departments of Education, Labor, and Public Health; U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division (WHD), U.S. OSHA, CONN-OSHA and ConnectiCOSH; Capitol Region Education Council (CREC), CT Women’s Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF); Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) and industry.CT’s Young Worker Health and Safety Team offers professional development, resources, data and events focused on preparing youth, and the adults working with them, to better navigate the world of work. In particular, the Team offers workshops on Working Papers for school officials; professional development on young worker safety awareness to educators in a train the trainer model; and annual exhibits and events for legislators and the public at the State Capitol to expand awareness of young workers – their history and their future. One popular resource, CT’s “Young Worker Safety Curriculum,” is a user friendly toolkit that includes workplace safety and child labor law resource information, links to health and safety websites, and provides students an opportunity to participate in important conversations about workplace hazards through role play scenarios. Currently, the Team is working with the State Department of Education on integrating this curriculum at the local level into classroom lessons to promote workplace health and safety for teens and to prepare them for workplace learning experiences such as internships and apprenticeships as well as summer jobs and – eventually - careers.
