About Jennifer Ridgway

Jennifer Ridgway is a Theatre Teaching Artist | activating artistry and moving the collective soul at Yard Dramas. She possess expertise in theatre, performing arts, arts administration, stage, drama and 31 more skills. Colleagues describe her as "Jennifer is an excellent director, with exceptional skill in directing for young audiences. Her production of my play Degas' Little Dancer as the touring show for North Carolina Theatre for Young People (spring 2008) was outstanding. She skillfully integrated krump dancing and other contemporary choreography in a way that supported and enriched the story and themes of the script in fresh and daring ways. Her casting decisions were spot-on, including the choice of a young African-American actor to play Degas. She was extremely respectful in communicating with me about any innovations to the script, asking my permission for any significant additions; was open to receiving rewrites and helpful in her feedback about the script; included me in rehearsal sessions; and listened to and incorporated my feedback. In short, she's a great director to work with new work and live playwrights! She also served as an excellent manager for much of the tour, keeping a large cast of young actors energized and focused, and made an extra effort to bring the production to several schools in my home county in Western North Carolina. She also went the extra mile to create a panel with Rosemary Newcott of the Alliance Theatre at the AATE conference in July 2008 to discuss both companies' productions of the play. I would love to work with her again!"

Teachers selected a specific pathway to their own creativity in this statewide professional development program designed to improve how teachers lead arts-based experiences for students. Participants honed their 21st century teaching and learning skills in inquiry, creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and performance-based assessment through sessions led by trained artists in theatre, visual art, music and dance. Together artists and teachers practiced mindfulness techniques and developed creative habits. Teachers who selected the theatre pathway studied as an actor, playwright, dramaturg, director, designer and critic with me! In their beginning stage of theatre study, these artist-teachers explored the play writing structure, investigated and analyzed contexts connecting findings to community and story, practiced the 7 rules of improvisation, developed comfort to physically execute the Laban efforts, honed their ability to play the action with strong tactics, strengthened their vocal instruments, explored the elements of design, and experimented with Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process. The teachers have a great understanding of the theatre process and a theatre artist's habits. With this insight, they can engage in a creative collaboration with a theatre teacher to design deep and meaningful arts integrated lessons!
