At 18 I got my first, serious job while doing a Childhood Studies university course. I wasn’t too sure what I really wanted to do for work so I was quite content to work at one of the local cinemas, meeting people and ensuring people got the best experience they could.From there I decided I would explore the aspects of teaching children and went to a different university to study, while doing seasonal work at the cinema when I was back on breaks. During my second year, I decided that that wasn’t the path I wanted to take and wanted to pursue a career.After leaving university, I started my first office job as a data entry clerk, quickly progressing into a more customer service based role. Whilst in that role I had the opportunity to delve into the world of systems and became the subject matter expert for my team. I fell in love with the systems side of my role and actively looked for more systems based tasks I could do for my team (fixing glitches, testing new developments and running tasks).Due to various reasons, I ended up essentially managing the running of the data entry team. I’d train new starters, create guidance documents and check their work. All the while still doing my customer service role and my systems role. I decided that I wanted to reduce the number of feathers in my cap and wanted to seek out new opportunities.In January 2022, I got the opportunity I was looking for and joined Indigo Telecom Group as a project resources, allocating engineers and organising the rotas for them.I was approached by my manager and several of my colleagues advising that a role in the systems team and that they believed I should take it. Realising these people believed in my ability, I applied and got the job! In August of the same year I started my gradual transition into the position, starting the role fully at the beginning of October.Currently, I am a Salesforce and Systems trainer - I’m able to utilise my experience from teaching and my experience working with systems to aid others in their use of the system. Though I’m still learning the system, the team I work with support and advise me, teaching my the best ways of doing this while also valuing my input.To paraphrase what one of the team said to me my first day, “You can’t ask stupid questions, everything is a learning experience”
