About Jennifer Peebles

Journalist & data wrangler at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Finder-outer of stuff. Counter-upper of found-out stuff. Requestor and getter of many, many public records. Was once told by the mayor of Tennessee's 13th largest city that I had a "smart mouth." Slowest banjo picker east of the Mississippi. Pathological cornbread-maker. Has played croquet in Blundale, Ga. But seriously: I (heart) public records, in both paper and electronic, machine-readable forms. I've spent 25 years as a reporter and editor in four states. The main themes of my work have been local and state government accountability, police misconduct and use-of-force issues, and fighting for and obtaining government information using freedom of information laws. I was proud to help gather and compile the data that would form the basis for the AJC's 2022 "Dangerous Dwellings" series, which won an IRE Award given out by the group Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. and won first place in its category in the National Headliner Awards. In 2019, I was part of an AJC team whose reporting on sexual harassment in Georgia state government prompted an overhaul of how the state deals with that issue. We obtained tens of thousands of pages of documents from dozens of state government agencies regarding their past sexual harassment cases and their handling, reading the documents and then created a database of the cases and their outcomes. The dataset we created then became the basis for several major stories. I was also part of a combined AJC/WSB-TV team that was a finalist in 2015 for the Tom Renner Award given out by the organization Investigative Reporters and Editors for the "Over the Line" series on police use of force, for which we created the first full accounting of people fatally shot by law enforcement in the state of Georgia. Tips, documents and data always welcomed, so please send 'em on.
