Bug Lessons Consulting LLC was founded with the mission to make science accessible to different audiences. Science communication looks different for every audience and project. To be successful, materials and techniques must adapt to the audience. I specialize in creating workshops that address specific topics, performing literature reviews with a critical lens that result in strategic recommendations, and developing different types of externally facing materials including training manuals, one page documents, short videos and everything in between.Often the path to developing a solution requires reaching externally to the subject matter experts in the field. To achieve this, I organize one on one interviews and panels of several experts to understand a topic more throughly. I have been working with insects for over 15 years and have nurtured my network carefully.I also offer individual consulting on various topics. During my PhD and Post-doc, I developed, designed and implemented a line of research investigating insecticide resistance (product efficacy, selection for resistance, molecular mechanisms of resistance and potential insecticide resistance management strategies) as it pertains to Cimex lectularius, the bed bug, at the University of Kentucky. While at the university, I published three research articles, four trade journal articles, co-developed the commercial product Pesticide Efficacy Testing Kit LightsOut™ Lab-in-a-Bag, gave over 20 oral presentations and won 12 competitive research and travel awards. I investigated resistance and molecular mechanisms of resistance in field populations of the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus. I surveyed susceptibility in field populations of mosquitoes, performed protein assays to investigate the association of esterases with organophosphate and pyrethroid resistance and developed one insecticide resistance management strategy for this pest. I also published three additional articles, won four competitive awards and gave 6 oral presentations.
