I am an aquatic ecologist and biogeochemist, and my main interest lies in the combined effects of abiotic (light, carbon, nutrients) and biotic (competition, grazing, predation) factors on organisms at lower trophic levels in aquatic foodwebs. More specifically, I study how biotic and abiotic factors influence the ecosystem metabolism (production and respiration), biomass development and species composition of algae and bacteria in various aquatic systems and environmental settings. On a larger scale, I am also interested in how aquatic ecosystems are affected by processes in the terrestrial environment (such as input of terrestrial organic matter), the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels, and the role of aquatic environments in the global carbon cycle. I am particularly interested in the role of different benthic primary producers (microalgae and macroalgae) and their relative contribution to whole-system primary production, especially in a climate change perspective. I have a great deal of experience from field sampling in various freshwater and marine systems, and from large- and small-scale experimental design and set-up.Since 2021 I am also involved in Marine monitoring of coastal aquatic vegetation in the northern Baltic Sea.
