Burns Fundraising spotlights clients’ key strengths, mapping the route from now to the future and growing our clients’ community of stakeholders, all with an eye towards strategically targeting limited donor dollars. We offer a range of services focused on the West Coast from honing an organization’s messaging, planning and leading comprehensive campaigns, developing compelling case statements and collateral, training staff and other constituents, prospecting new donors and planning major, annual and special gift programs.

Led business development, prospecting and client outreach and development to launch Oregon office of Cook Silverman Search. Cook Silverman Search is a retained search firm focused on senior management positions for nonprofit organizations including development, marketing/communications, and executive directors.

Managed a pool of between 125 to 150 major gift donors; Created and implemented individual outreach and cultivation strategy for each donor. Met with donors to cultivate and ultimately solicit them for a gift during a comprehensive campaign. Developed and executed a $5M donor led volunteer campaign for Sickle Cell Disease. Supervised Development Associate. Created individuated letters, proposals and other communication materials for donors.

Major gifts fundraising on behalf of Brown University for Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and the San Francisco Bay Area. Created individual goals and a strategic plan for achieving those donor’s goals, based on previous giving, capacity and my relationship with the donor. Secured 84 visits within my pool of 230 potential donors that I managed, consisting of parents and alumni. Staffed the President, Deans, Provost and produced 10 different sized events for varying constituencies. Coordinated directly with the Office of the Provost, the appropriate Dean or Professor to get the right information to coordinate information or schedule a visit or set up an event. Personally raising over $1.5 M in FY ’13 and soliciting over $5M. Supervised team of 3 to implement community relations strategy to successfully engage and cultivate alumni as volunteers and future donors to the University.

(Organization previously titled Preschool California) Led federal advocacy efforts including strategic advocacy engagement, bill development, political coalition building and legislator engagement. Conducted policy and legislative analysis on early learning state and federal bills and other policy efforts. Managed state policy projects that have developed into broadly supported legislation. Led efforts to inform statewide reform on child care licensing and developmental screenings. Developed alternative budget proposals that led to preservation of early learning funding in the state budget.

Conducted policy analysis and research on preschool supply and demand, early care and education capacity, school finance, and educational equity in California. Organized and managed early childhood policy summits and work groups to build consensus and develop recommendations in preparation for the recently released ballot initiative, “Our Children, Our Future,” as well as otherlegislative efforts. Advocated on behalf of early care and education at the local, state and federal level.

Analyzed the use of the Self-Sufficiency Standard and online calculator by different agencies in California. Developed a strategic plan for expanding the use of the standard and for incorporating it into new public policy. Published best practices and recommendations in “Moving Toward Economic Security” 2009 report.

Managed political strategy for paid parental leave, child care and equal pay legislation. Conducted research to use in NOW’s economic policy efforts. Lobbied Congressional staff on behalf of NOW effecting the passage of the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Drafted testimony submitted to the House Education and Labor Committee regarding family friendly labor laws.
