My role has been pivotal in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of data and reporting systems that strengthen the Victorian Government’s surveillance of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. This is achieved through the preparation of regular and ad hoc reporting products that support decision-making for infectious disease surveillance, outbreak and response activities. My other outputs include data visualisation dashboards, infographics and other graphical presentations of surveillance data that could be used to clearly illustrate the findings from reports. With a strong focus on automation, I use a wide range of technology, such as RStudio, Power Query and R Scripts, to automate regular reports and create templates that could be integrated with other electronic record systems (e.g., Transmission Response Epidemiology Victoria Information System or TREVI, Public Health Event Surveillance System or PHESS, the ABS’ TableBuilder). My initiatives allow critical public health information in proper format to be easily shared among Local, State and Federal public health agencies to speed up response times to infectious disease outbreaks. My role also involves extensive collaboration with experts and multidisciplinary teams, such as Epidemiologists, Public Health Officials, Medical Leads and Directors, helping them interpret patterns and trends in surveillance data. This collaboration not only reduces disparities, inconsistencies and duplication of efforts but also ensures consistent access to reliable data for the benefit of Victorian communities. In addition to my regular tasks, I assume higher-level responsibilities that include defining data management framework, developing and maintaining SOPs for data processes, formulating data modernisation strategies, and pursuing continuous improvement opportunities to streamline the collection, interpretation and dissemination of data for decision-making.

Equipped with strong technical skills, I primarily used RStudio to prepare and update routine and ad hoc reports, as well as to create and maintain technical program codes. SQL was used to retrieve data from databases and carry out more complex queries. Additionally, I utilised Power BI to prepare and facilitate the reporting of data and other critical metrics in the form of dashboards for distribution across the branch. To supplement my technical proficiency are my teamwork and interpersonal skills. These were required when working with the Data Provision Team in preparing the Situation Report (SITREP) that supplied stakeholders with a quick snapshot of the current COVID-19 surveillance data. Supporting continuous improvements, I contributed to further streamline the full cycle data reporting procedures and protocols on Azure DevOps.

Working at an analytics consultancy business, I was a member of the Vaccine Operations Centre that provided analytical products (e.g., regular and ad hoc reports, interactive dashboards) for key Government clients, as well as other stakeholders, such as media agencies, COVID-19 manufacturers and logistics companies. I was involved in end-to-end data management and analytics, from combining data from different sources, to building data models, and to data cleaning and visualisation. Going above and beyond, I took on additional responsibilities, such as guiding junior team members on dashboard and report preparation and reviewing their outputs to identify and rectify data quality issues. I also contributed to the design of self-service interactive dashboards and the automation of reports, primarily using Qlik Sense and Qlik NPrinting, respectively. Other major contributions included the consolidation of data into a single repository, integration of new information into databases using SQL/Teradata query.
