“A run sheet is often a suggestion rather than a set process”Originally qualified as a physical education teacher, I worked in the health and fitness industry and gradually moved into the events industry. The first stage of my events career had me living in Asia working across many different industries and events. The cultural and language differences can really test your skills, but it also taught me patience and acceptance that things are often done differently in other countries. The size of some of the shows in China is like nothing else in the world. You can get tens of thousands of people a day visiting an exhibition hall. I have also spent time traveling the country with Michelle Bridges’ 12-week body transformation programme. Back then there would be a huge indoor or outdoor workout session, followed by a celebration of their achievements. Tour de Cure bike rides are a logistical exercise of almost military proportions, particularly when in remote locations. You need to know where every rider, support crew, medical, mechanical, and catering team is in real-time. And you need to make quick decisions if there is an accident or weather delay. Like most events, no two days are the same. One night you’re staying in a back-packers, and the next you’re staying in a 5-start hotel. I have met some of the most inspiring, courageous, and occasionally famous people, contributing to a great cause and helping people along the way.When you’ve managed many events, you realise that quite often, a run sheet is merely a suggestion. Live events change by the minute and the demands of speakers or delegates can throw your schedule if not managed effectively. This is where expertise plays a big role in the success of an event, as you can anticipate situations and ensure things continue to run smoothly. I still get an adrenalin rush with every new event, mainly because I set the bar high, and I get a real sense of achievement when my clients are overwhelmed as a result of a successful event. But there's always more to learn and I’m keen to continually bring creative solutions to clients and deliver impactful brand engagement and audience experiences.
