I would love to learn more about you and your network, and hope that I might be a help to you in your professional life.After about 30 years in journalism, I left the field in late 2021. I had been at The Daily Progress for 26 years, 23 of which as city editor. My time at the newspaper was wonderful. I loved working with reporters, photographers, designers, copy editors and others to tell stories and produce other content that, we all hoped, had an important place in the Charlottesville-area community. I became friends with so many great coworkers .. smart, funny, kind, interesting people. My fellow staff members and I were committed to informing and entertaining readers with accurate, timely and thought-provoking content.It was a good run, but the time came to do something different. Switching careers is not easy, but I was fortunate to have built up a lengthy and diverse set of skills that transferred to an administrative career in education, which had become my goal.First I served as an enrollment assistant at Piedmont Virginia Community College. I enjoyed this position because of the mix of hard and people skills at play every day. I was part-time and went into it with the understanding that I would continue to look for a full-time job.That opportunity came up in 2023 at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where I am currently a senior administrative assistant in the Department of Surgery. I support four surgeons with tasks such as calendar management, making travel arrangements and filing expense reports. I have been involved in the planning and execution of a national conference and I serve as the department coordinator for the promotion and tenure process.My role, ultimately, is to make others' lives smoother, and I enjoy that. I've learned much on the job and have been supported by management in taking advantage of professional development opportunities.I'm glad to be at UVA and working with a great team in an environment whose purpose is to significantly help people!Thanks for reading ...
