Senior Research AssistantTenera Environmental Jan 2006 - Jul 2010San Luis Obispo, California, UsI started at Tenera as Research Assistant I in the plankton laboratory sorting through plankton samples to pull larval fish and other target organisms. I quickly took on more responsibilities eventually becoming the lab manager in which I ran the lab on a daily basis. I trained new employees, performed quality control on all lab personnel, ordered lab supplies, organized all samples, helped re-write lab procedures, ensured safety standards were being met, ensured projects were on budget, and communicated with non-lab employees to coordinate projects. At Tenera I also had the opportunity for extensive field work including collecting plankton samples, impingement studies, marine mammal observations, endangered species monitoring, and other boat related collecting and observing. My four and a half years at this company helped develop my leadership skills, communication abilities, writing skills, field techniques, lab techniques, and overall people skills. I always took opportunities to learn new skills and the company recognized my excellent work ethic. I left the company to further my education, which they fully supported. -
Forest AttendantSouthern California Edison Sep 2005 - Nov 2005Rosemead, Ca, UsI began volunteering with Southern California Edison shortly after I completed my undergrad. They were impressed by my work ethic and created a temporary position for me. As a volunteer I conducted owl surveys, land surveys, and fish surveys in the lake. As an employee I was hired to conduct a vegetation analysis in areas where the spotted owl was known to live. This survey included tree classification, details of vegetation in the area, and GPS of the locations. This job opportunity allowed me to expand my forestry knowledge and learn skills in a field that I was not specifically trained for. I quickly picked up skills and techniques that I had previously not used.
