Performed biomedical research on the role of human cytomegalovirus infection in cardiovascular disease. Worked with bioengineers to develop a system for culturing primary endothelial cells under fluid flow in order to simulate stresses from physiological blood flow. By simulating blood flow in vitro, for the first time we were able to study HCMV infection and resulting inflammation under the physiological conditions that occur in the human artery. Applied for, and was awarded funding from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to support my research. Trained junior colleagues in scientific techniques and lab safety. Maintained inventory of lab supplies, reconciled packing slips, and delivered purchasing documents to UC business officials.Fields of Research: Virology, cardiovascular physiology, bioengineering, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology.Laboratory Techniques: Primary cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISA, cytokine arrays, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, and viral preparation and titration.
