About Jennifer L Smith

I am a currently tenured microbiology professor at a community college in the Ft. Worth, Texas area. I coordinate microbiology courses and manage our student laboratory assistants, and develop curriculum for our undergraduate pre-health students. I have a combined 10 years classroom and lab teaching experience at the university and community college level. In 2019 I was selected for the Chancellor's Exemplary Teaching Award for my district, with consistent 90% class success rate for 5+ years. I have been an author for chapters and supplemental materials for three microbiology textbooks. I have six years previous research experience in cancer vaccine development, humanized mice models, molecular genetics, and other immunology in vitro/in vivo studies. I am a contributor on publications and involved in one current clinical trial. I have been involved in online communities in leadership roles periodically since 2012 and currently serve as the lead community manager for discord for the*gameHERs. We celebrate and elevate women, non-binary, and minority gamers. Our discord community has over 3000 members, and I manage a staff of 7 moderators. Having been an avid gamer all my life, gaming and the people in it holds an important place in my life.Additionally, I have previous background in music performance, and am an executive board member of Mu Phi Epsilon Professional Music Fraternity, guiding our 85 collegiate chapters regional district directors across the United States, planning triennial conventions, contributing to budget management, and chapter troubleshooting.My interests are in developing interdisciplinary opportunities for student research at the community college level, research and practical development of teaching strategies/ student engagement especially for challenged and underserved communities, and am constantly seeking new leadership roles for personal growth. Any opportunities to develop skills in lab management, additional microbiology, genetics, or immunology research, overall leadership and professionalism, community management, student organization logistics or management, and teaching pedagogy are welcome. I am pursuing opportunities in content creation or creator management.
