Sensory Design & Technology - trading as "eScent" is a Transformative Technology to help humanity leverage their sense of smell for good. eScent an intelligent way of dispensing fragrances - and other liquids - that offers more personal protective assurance and is bio-synchronised to the physical and emotional state of the wearer. eScent features smart sensors, embedded with AI and voice analytics, which can detect early increases in stress and other biometric parameters. These sensors then trigger the release of a localised cloud of scent - a “Scent Bubble” that changes moment by moment, reacting to and anticipating the wearers mood at exactly the right time. The patented wearable platform technology and AI-powered liquid dispenser can be deployed in a range of wearables including facemasks, garment buttons, jewellery, smart textiles and AR/VR headsets. eScent is the trading name for “Sensory Design & Technology Ltd” and owns the patent portfolio for eScent; an enabling platform technology and delivery device that emits fragrances (and other liquids) at the right time, in the right place, depending on the context. The company was founded by Dr Tillotson, Prof Andreas Manz (Imperial, KIST, ISAS) and Jonathan Lloyd-Platt

  • University Of Cambridge
    Visiting Scholar, Sensor-Induced Scent Release
University Of Cambridge Oct 2009 - Mar 2017
    Dept Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology
The focus of my research was on wearable sensor-induced scent release in the Healthcare Biotechnology Group (Biosensors & Diagnostics) at the Institute of Biotechnology. I was a member of Professor Chris Lowes HealthCare Biotech group followed by Dr Ljiliana Fruk BioNanoEngineering Group.Building on design research from Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London, 2001-2015) through the controllable release of scent on demand, I developed prototypes that provided the localised release of scents in response to user-driven needs. Inspired by nature and the defence mechanism in bombardier beetles, the aim of the research was to integrate novel scent producing technologies with real-time data from biosensors, or other sound analysis or sensor-based trigger that is relevant to the situation, health condition or location. This could be the release of counteractive wellbeing scents when stress levels are detected (via stress-related body odour, sweat, skin response, etc) or the sleep/wake cycle is disturbed or perfumes pre-programmed to enhance mood, recall autobiographical memories, complement fashion, lifestyle, an experience, occasion, sport, yoga, music, or insect repellent released in response to the sound frequency of a mosquito, or decongestants in response to a cough or a sneeze - or simply to alert the user to changes in their condition with pleasant aromas in response to other stimuli. Such technologies can be embedded into wearable technologies to create a personalised ‘scent bubble’ around the face; an area of constant, detectable scent for the user for improved wellness and digital preventative healthcare solutions.
  • Central Saint Martins, University Of The Arts London
    Reader, Sensory Fashion
Central Saint Martins, University Of The Arts London Mar 2013 - Sep 2015
    Kings Cross London
I was a Reader sensory fashion and textile research for wellbeing and healthcare applications before leaving Central Saint Martins in 2015 to concentrate on the commercialisation on eScent® at Cambridge University. By introducing responsive or adaptive effects that change the experience of fragrance to a more intimate communication of identity, I have created a new sustainable platform that breaks the tradition of fragrance delivery. My aim now is to expand this platform at Cambridge and my start-up and bring a totally new and undiscovered dimension to fashion, textiles and accessories through the sense of smell. During my time at CSM, I explored novel ways to create fashion, textiles and interactive structures that release scent - on demand - founded on a strong design awareness to meet people’s needs, particularly in chronic mental health. My experience in the healthcare sector and as a long-term service user (20+ years) informed my research. I used the biomedical sciences and emerging technologies to tap into the expanding frontier of smell as a new communication vehicle. I focused on the relationship between aromachology (the science of fragrance) and emotional wellbeing, combined with multi-sensory design to develop experimental strategies that improve self and social confidence for individuals suffering from stress, insomnia and anxiety.
  • Central Saint Martins, University Of The Arts London
Wellbeing Platform Leader- Textiles Future Research Centre (Ual)
Central Saint Martins, University Of The Arts London Jan 2008 - Sep 2015
    London
I was a Lead Researcher and Platform Leader in The Textile Futures Research Centre (TFRC) which comprised of researchers across Chelsea College of Art and Design and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts London. My remit was to drive the Wellbeing platform. The remit of the Centre is to undertake a clearly focused range of textile related research that facilitates technology translation and convergence, improving the interface between science and design, the exploration of sustainability, the expansion of the textile product/applications, and the redefinition of cultural and aesthetic norms. TFRC is building on staff and student work in the areas of fashion, product, environment, architecture, medicine, well-being as well as history and theory.
  • Central Saint Martins, University Of The Arts London
    Senior Research Fellow
Central Saint Martins, University Of The Arts London Sep 2001 - Mar 2013
    Central Saint Martins, Kings Cross
My research practice builds on previous work funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council, Materials KTN ‘Smarts Ideas’ Award, EEDA, NESTA and EPSRC, which specialised in the research and development of wearable wireless sensor networks and microfluidic devices for fragrance delivery and therapeutic applications in ‘emotional clothing’. This research is now patented and being commercialised. My interests centred on finding and applying novel ways of creating responsive fashion, textiles and jewellery to enhance people lifestyles and experiences using the olfactory sense as a communication tool, with a particular focus on the relationship between aromas, colour and emotional wellbeing. Results of my research have been reported at major international conferences – including AVANTEX, SIGGRAPH, Royal Society, e-Culture Fair, Tate Modern, WIRED NextFest, Dana Centre, Science Museum, Tokyo Design Centre, ICA London, TEDxGranta, V&A, Banff New Media Institute, amongst others, and popular media – including WIRED, Women’s Wear Daily, Times Higher, FT, CNN, The Guardian, Harpers & Queen, Harpers Bazaar, Sunday Times, Perfumer & Flavourist.
