I am an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne, working in the interdisciplinary field of human-computer interaction. I lead the Design for Ageing theme in the Human-Computer Interaction group in the School of Computing and Information Systems, where I am Deputy Head of School (research). My recent research, funded by an ARC Future Fellowship, focuses on the design and use of emerging technologies, such as immersive virtual reality, to enhance and enrich social and emotional wellbeing in later life, especially in aged care settings. In this work, I use qualitative and participatory methods to understand how older adults and aged care providers use technology for social benefit. This work aims to improve how we design and deploy technologies with older adults, especially in sensitive settings such as aged care where a respectful and empathetic approach is critical to ensure new technologies provide benefit and do not cause harm. I am part of a large interdisciplinary team developing and evaluating technologies for using music therapy in dementia care, and am working with a technology startup to design accessible video calling technology for isolated older adults.
