About Jennifer Shevach
I love solving problems of all kinds. Got a toddler who won’t stay in bed past 4:30am? Solved it. Need software developed to ease customer pain? Solved it. Have developers on the same team who never seem to see eye-to-eye? Solved it.Throughout my adult life I have gained a very diverse set of experiences. Whether supporting high-volume manufacturing software 24x7, owning my own fitness business, being a full-time mom to two special needs daughters, or re-entering the technology industry after 12 years, I have encountered issues that many of my peers have not. I use everything I have learned to conquer the challenges I am confronted with at Pendo as a Director of Engineering, where I build high-performing teams solving complex customer problems. At the heart of all this, I am a strong, independent woman raising two strong, independent women. I am a results-driven leader who doesn’t shy away from a challenge. And I am always in pursuit of improvement - self, product, team, home, and community. If you are a software leader who wants to build out their network, I’d love to hear from you. When connecting, send me the most recent book you have read, as I’m always looking for that next recommendation. (Rising Strong, Brené Brown) If you are interested in working with me at Pendo, I’d love to hear from you as well! Take a look at our core values, and let me know which one speaks to you. Sr. Director Of Engineering
Director Of Engineering
In my first year as Director of Engineering, I led a growing group of teams to build our Digital Adoption product offering from the ground up. I have now transitioned to our flagship product, Pendo Engage, where I lead a set of global teams to deliver high quality software.
Engineering Manager
Over the course of my two+ years as an Engineering Manager at Pendo, I managed a team developing a new Pendo product (Adopt) while also serving as the technical team lead. Then moved over to our primary Guides to to help them bring a new standard of quality to the Visual Design Studio.
Sr Backend Engineer
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Pendo, I developed maintainable, performant Go code deployed to Google Cloud Platform. I worked in our event ingestion system and guides data model, before becoming the technical lead of a new team developing a new product, Pendo Adopt. In that role, I was the primary designer of the backend system needed to support Adopt.
Software Engineer
When I began my journey at the Dude, I had much to learn. Though I had a solid foundation of computer science skills and experience, my knowledge in their platform was sparse to non-existent. Seeing that as a learning opportunity, I quickly came up to speed, becoming one of the backend developers on an SaaS-based inventory product utilizing C# in the .Net Framework. Though my concentration was backend design and development, our team worked collaboratively on our sprint goals, each of us becoming well-versed in user story development, frontend code, backend code, and software quality for our product. After about 9 months, the business shifted focus, setting aside the inventory product in favor of new feature development for our existing work order system. I embraced the opportunity to learn even more about our platform, customers, and codebase, extending both my knowledge and collaborative outreach. In May 2017, our team was tasked with creating a process for saving the history of work order changes as they occurred. Though we could have implemented a simple REST api approach, the team decided to use the kafka messaging system so that any member of our distributed environment could discover these changes in real time. I became the champion of this effort, from the design and user stories, to collaborating with the other teams, implementing much of the code, and presenting the design and progress of development to the department. In fact, I recently gave a tech talk at NCSU on our history system using kafka, which was well-received.During my time at the Dude, I have increased the depth of my current technical knowledge while demonstrating my worth as a passionate, results-driven engineer who strives to understand problems and their solutions all the way through from beginning to end.
Full Stack Software Engineer / Developer
During my time as the sole web developer for my fitness business, I came to realize that my passion is using technology to solve problems. For example, rather than take daily class attendance with pen and paper only to enter it into a spreadsheet later, I built a module in CMS Made Simple to quickly enter attendance using the web on my phone each morning. Since closing my fitness business at the end of April, I have turned my attention to continuing education in the web development arena, as well as using resources to determine the best fit for me in the current software engineering environment. So far, I have completed a course complete with sample code in Angular.js, and have finished the self-inventory from the book "What Color is My Parachute."
Owner And Web Developer
After taking a few years off to raise my daughters, I earned certifications in both Group Exercise and Personal Fitness Training from AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) and taught group exercise at local gyms. I found myself, though, craving more responsibility, so I decided to open my own women's fitness boot camp. As the owner and only trainer, I set up both the company and the fitness program. I handled all legal, financial, and marketing aspects of the business, and was able to grow the client base steadily for several years, eventually opening a second location under another trainer. During this time, I helped over 200 women find a place where they could make daily fitness a reality for them. With a background in computer science, I wanted to handle all aspects of the company's website. I learned about SEO, built a basic website, and kept the content up to date. However, I could see that other companies were moving more and more capabilities to their websites, so I began to learn about the content management system, CMS Made Simple.I setup a CMS Made Simple environment, and used their modules to build calendaring, login, class registration, and ecommerce into the site. When I found myself spending a lot of time managing administrative tasks in Excel, I decided to build administrative capabilities into the website using protected content and building modules of my own. I enjoyed being able to come up with a task that could be done using a web interface, designing it, coding it, and then using it every day.Next came the movement to mobile and responsive design, so I picked up Bootstrap and converted my entire site to be responsive. During this change, I also reworked the page flow based on the latest UX design theories to improve the user experience.Even though my small business was a fitness boot camp, my computer science and development skills remained current and broad.
Software Engineer
With a fresh degree in Computer Science in hand, I began my professional career at Intel's Fab 12 in 1995. My first job there was as an application owner for a mission critical factory application used by the engineering department to define manufacturing specs for their microprocessors. The automation department was a cross-functional team that supported all factory software, and I learned quickly how to work with both customers and peers even under pressure.Wanting to move out of the factory, I moved to a QA role in a group tasked with developing audio and video codecs for Intel's set top box. I learned how to build code, find bugs, work with developers and customers to clarify requirements, and even picked up some knowledge of video compression standards. After consistently demonstrating leadership and communication skills, I was given the opportunity to be a SQA manager for a small team. Growing the careers of my team while managing the priorities of their tasks by working with our customers was both challenging and rewarding. It was during this time, that I began Masters studies at Columbia University while working full time. My Masters was completed in just two years. With a desire to move from Arizona to North Carolina, I took a QA developer job at a small acquisition site in Raleigh, NC. It was during this job that I first learned about web sites, html, and server-side scripting. I enjoyed the work, but eventually chose motherhood full time.
