'To go fast go alone, to go far go together.' That proverb sums up my career: from introverted economic analyst to executive leader and strategist - and now facilitator of the strategic leadership of others. At my mid-career crossroads I took the generalist path: I shifted from getting results through my own thinking to helping others do their best thinking – particularly in groups with diverse expertise. What I love about this kind of collaborative cognition is the wonderful ‘whole greater than the sum of the parts’ experience, as people open up to previously unthinkable opportunities.Yet I’ve learned that it is at those moments of greatest opportunity (often in and around crisis) that the greatest fear can emerge in groups – fear, as well as denial, shame and all the other human experiences that constrain cognition, narrow horizons and shrink the sense of possibility needed for breakthrough thinking. All of which leads me to what I see as the challenge of our times: how we, as Homo sapiens (‘the wise ones’), can harness the diversity of our thinking to tackle the crises we face – not as lone-wolf experts but together.Tapping into our collective wisdom is hard these days: not only are we as individuals dumbing ourselves down with digital distractions and the exhaustion of modern life, we’re actually spending less time together in face-to-face interaction, the very place where we evolved our precious intelligence, and where we still have an edge over artificial intelligence.Support for face-to-face thinking is now my career focus. I work mostly with CEOs, currently with leaders across government (local, State and Federal), with a focus on resilience in complex systems likeorganisations and communities.Working with the human dimensions of complex systems has become, surprisingly for such a nerdy analyst, my speciality!𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬, 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙝𝙩𝙩𝙥𝙨://𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.𝙘𝙤𝙢.𝙖𝙪/𝙝𝙤𝙬-𝙬𝙚-𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠/𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖 𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙩-𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣, 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙩𝙮 - 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 - 𝙄'𝙙 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪.
