The Western Region of the Wage and Hour Division covers eight states and three U.S. territories. I make recommendations to certify immigrant victims of labor crimes and human trafficking who are applying for U and/or T Nonimmigrant Status. I work with low-wage immigrant workers in various industries; partner with federal, state and local civil and criminal law enforcement agencies to combat labor-related criminal activity and trafficking. I worked primarily on two class action labor trafficking cases of exploited immigrant workers from Asia, and I have served on the team combating HB 56, the anti-immigrant state legislation passed in Alabama. I provided technical support on T visas, U visas, and other immigration relief; participated in national policy discussions surrounding immigrant justice and workers' rights issues.

Under the mentorship of supervising attorney Lynette Parker, represented an asylum-seeking client, interviewed clients with language interpreters, corresponded with mental health care providers about victims of violence and trauma, developed case theory, prepared immigration and government documents. Trained by mental health professionals on how to comprehend and interact with victims of various forms of severe trauma.

Sydney, Australia

Advocated on behalf of asylum seekers in Australia, communicated with the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, researched Australia’s immigration and detention policies. Analyzed and made recommendations for The Protection of Women and Girls, a prospective publication written by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Researched international human rights law, Geneva Convention, Guantanamo Bay and allegations of torture by detainees; analyzed U.S. case law regarding evidence procured by alleged torture and its admissibility in court; compared U.S. case law with Australian and U.K. case law to help Amnesty International understand judicial decisions on torture.
