About Capt. Jaquelyn Burton, Emba, Afni,

Our industries depend on human-machine teaming. A vessel and its systems are only as resilient as the crew's understanding and ability to operate them safely. The coming age of human-system resilience requires we rethink how we view systems to include purpose and people. Ecosystems and people regularly interact with systems of systems in which they may be a part to unite for a purpose, whether it be food or energy production, transport, or exploration. In engineering and design of future systems of systems, these stakeholders' interactions, expectations, and tradeoffs are vital to creating lasting and successful industrial solutions. I envision a future where technology enhances our potential and prioritizes safety, efficiency, and sustainability. For the past twenty years, I have been passionate about shaping the future of Ocean Industries. I'm now eager to take on a more prominent role in the industry, helping usher in the age of human-system resilience for the Ocean industries. My hands-on experience, from working on some of the first regas/FSRU vessels and LNG STS operations to leading the response team during a significant engine room fire on a RoRo in 2017, has shown me how vital integrated, resilient solutions are for reducing downtime, costs, and accidents in offshore operations.Over the past four years, I've grown the Design team from three to ten multidisciplinary thinkers across Norway, Finland, Poland, and India. We've worked on internal R&D products, international development projects, and research, and it has been a privilege to speak at such prestigious forums as the IMO's Women in Maritime Day, Nor-Shipping's Ocean Leadership Conference, and London International Shipping Week. As Simon Sinek describes with his "infinite game" analogy, Maritime is all about long-term success through continuous relationships, which is how the maritime world has operated for centuries. In my daily work, board work, and mentoring with WISTA Norway, the Nautical Institute, Women Offshore, and Maritime SheEO, as well as here on LinkedIn, I have contact with industry changemakers that can collaborate as an ecosystem to safeguard people and the planet. I am currently in my second year of the Global Executive PhD program in strategic management at the top FT-ranked business school in Europe, ESCP. My research directly concerns how maritime and Ocean leaders evaluate, decide, and invest in future-ready Industry 5.0 solutions and technology.
