During my stint with RMG, I prepared monthly management accounts and year end accounts for the group, prepared forecasts and introduced potential funders. This gave me a real commercial perspective of business from the other side of the fence from practice.

I joined GT upon qualification, in the Manchester office and sent over 12 years in the SME department, becoming the senior manager in that department. During my time at GT, I gained has extensive experience in the following areas:Charities – headed the charities group in Manchester and was part of the national charity special team, dealing with charities and not for profit entities, ranging in size from £1m to £50m income entities, delivering the audit, assurance and governance services to these entities and co-ordinating tax and other services to these organisations, dealing with audit committees and full boards of trustees. These entities ranged from training for adolescents, care providers to the mentally and physically handicapped, leisure and sport providers to the local authority, theatres and arts, religious foundations and membership organisations. Financial services – headed the financial services group in Manchester and part of the national financial services team, dealing with a range of financial service companies, being stock brokers, insurance brokers, loan brokers, accident management companies and IFAs. Clients have ranged from £500k turnover insurance brokers to £50m turnover sophisticated financial services groups with overseas subsidiaries. Experienced in the audit and governance of client monies in these sectors, completion of Gabriel reports and handling arrow visits by the FSA.Other commercial sectors – significant experience in vehicle leasing, waste management – scrap metal, recycling, biomass power plants, pub companys/restaurants, haulage and coach operators, construction and ancillary providers – sub-contractors, property developers, timber/building merchants, marble and granite (decorative stones), gun dealer!!!, food processing and retail, motor dealers, business services.I have had a significant number of VC backed businesses, groups of companies and also experience in dealing with non-listed PLCs.

I trained with a well regarded independent firm of accountants based in Manchester, gaining first time passes as an ACA. I specialised in SME's with the provision of accounting, audit and tax services.

As with all family businesses, I was expected to start at an early age. My father operated a fleet of approximately 40 coaches, which provided holidays, tours, day trips, contract and private hire to businesses, organisations and the general public in Manchester, Cheshire and Staffordshire. I worked my way through from cleaning coaches to booking clerk to coach driver, before seeing the light to become an accountant!! The experience did teach me how to deal with people from all walks of life and gave me an enthusiasm to improve the performance of owner managed businesses so that they do not go the same way as my family's business.
