How do we communicate science to a wider audience?Successful communication of scientific ideas to the general public is of the utmost importance. Mistrust in science is at an all-time high, and effective communication and connection with those outside of science is necessary to get ideas across and build trust. My personal philosophy is science is for everyone. Oftentimes there's a high barrier to entry, requiring specialized knowledge and vocabulary, which turns droves of people away. As an aspiring science communicator, my goal is to help bridge the gap between scientists and non-scientists, helping non-scientists to not only understand complex science ideas, but to foster a sense of excitement and wonder about the world around them. My graduate training (PhD and Master's) has given me extensive experience in researching complex topics, analyzing data, and breaking down results to a variety of audiences, ranging from fellow scientists, to students learning concepts for the first time, to community members unfamiliar with science topics at all. Complementing my graduate training is my extensive work in mass media. I am well versed in a variety of media forms such as print, video, and audio. My work in print media ranges from writing highly technical journal articles for academics to newspaper articles on science topics for the general public. As a teaching tool, I have written, produced, and edited video pieces on science and natural history topics to educate others. My audio media experience includes hosting and producing a podcast called "That Science and Nature Show", which is specifically aimed at a non-science audience. The goal behind specializing in media is not only to reach more people about scientific topics, but to personally connect with them on how and why all of this matters.
