Responsible for the development of commercial quantum applications, all semiconductor-based quantum processor fabrication and the quantum system technology R&D. Executed successfully under a $15+M annual fabrication budget. Member of the 10-person Executive Team.Assembled and led the program tasked with delivering commercial value in quantum applications. Prioritized and selected application areas based on computational difficulty and requiring optimization, sampling, or advanced machine learning. Built and managed a cross-disciplinary program to define and deliver application requirements across the entire technology stack, including heterogenous hardware through software layers and cloud-based applications layer. Mentored several early-stage start-ups to integrate business plan and strategy with technology goals in areas such as quantitative finance, protein design, health tech, logistics, and wind farm management.Championed and led D-Wave’s technology R&D towards novel quantum computing systems.

Presented quarterly technology and product updates to the Board.Co-developed next generation product from the ground-up and drove an architectural shift to dramatically increase the potential scale and computational power of the next-generation quantum processor. The program successfully delivered a 700-qubit system on a very aggressive schedule, allowing D-Wave to close $50M financing and continue developing the technology towards commercial product release.Increased focus on risk mitigation to cover critical and vulnerable areas of technology with development of second source options, including strategic acquisition of a key component vendor.Oversight of D-Wave’s quantum machine learning program, including supervising a chief scientist as the program lead, and executing a plan for technology validation and evaluating application opportunities.Developed and led a “horizon” program that focused rapid performance development of future product technology R&D, including the development of universal quantum computing devices.

Responsible for the development of Adiabatic Quantum Computer (AQC) systems. Provided technical leadership related to design, fabrication, modeling and testing of superconducting devices and processors. Presented quarterly technology and product updates to the Board.Led team to successfully build and demonstrate the first-ever prototype quantum processors with 16- and 28-qubits, followed by implementing the first scalable quantum architecture.Led team through build and deployment of world’s first commercial quantum computer, the D-Wave One, with 128-qubits and local superconducting digital memory. Played a key role in marketing and business development for the D-Wave One product, which was sold to Lockheed Martin Corp. and available for remote access.Responsible for delivering five system product generations. Built the technology infrastructure required for R&D of quantum processors and systems, including scoping and establishing processor fabrication capabilities, lab infrastructure (including cryogenic systems for ultra-cold temperature operation – 15mK or -273 Celsius), and the development, design and test systems and infrastructure to support rapid prototyping design.Created and managed strategic scaling plan based on major technological waypoints matched with business progress.Established an R&D culture of excellence, supporting flexibility and opportunities to publish leading scientific and engineering work, while maintaining focus on objectives and achieving successful objectives.

Developed a strong foundation of intellectual property for the organization to promote both freedom to practice as well as amplifying D-Wave’s competitive position in the market. D-Wave’s portfolio was ranked top four in Computer Systems by IEEE Spectrum in 2012 (Patent Power 2012 / Computer Systems).Led technical projects and collaborations related to algorithms, applications, and device-level validation based on superconductor-based devices.Made key decisions around prioritization of technologies for protection, balancing patent expenses against strategic value to technology roadmap. Established and managed in-house program to encourage scientists to capture their ideas and potential inventions.Managed legal costs, captured high-quality intellectual property, and managed and negotiated collaboration and license agreements.
