Staff Software EngineerDexcare Sep 2022 - PresentSeattle, Wa, UsQ2 2023 - Architected and led development for DexCare's next generation "FastPages" web platform: webpages and search for large health systems (thousands of providers and departments). The platform supports custom websites while still reusing a common codebase. I chose the hosting platforms, software tools, deployment strategies, testing and development processes. I also led the groups that developed the platform.- Results since the platform launch in July 2024 - 1 second average page load times, 10 deployments/day development velocity, 0 critical bugs, 2 "uneventful" health system launches, increased booking conversion rates. Currently responsible for the standards, development, and documentation of the FastPages core library.- New feature development: I liaison with a wide range of implementation teams and product groups to guide development and contributions to the core library.- I also manage the core FastPages frontend engineering team. Currently working with other teams in DexCare to develop standards and unify engineering efforts.- Q1 2024 - Initiated and led a DexCare-wide schema unification effort, consolidating 4 competing web schemas into 1 schema. Currently active on the DexCare schema council in an ongoing effort to maintain schema unity.- Q2 2024 - Initiated and led a DexCare-wide analytics unification effort. 2 product lines now share decoupled analytics code with others on the way. -
Senior Frontend DeveloperWompmobile Jan 2017 - Sep 2022Bellingham, Washington, UsUntil WompMobile's acquisition in 2022, I led a team that developed Progressive Web Applications and search microservices for a variety of large retailers and publishers.- Clients included AT&T, Bed Bath & Beyond, zales.com, Walmart labs.- Typical page volumes were 11 million pageviews/day up to 5 million pageviews/hour during Black Friday. -
ProfessorWestern Washington University Sep 2012 - Jul 2017Bellingham, Washington, UsWhile teaching industrial design and engineering at WWU, I developing virtual curriculum for learning CAD at www.StudyCAD.com (now finally deprecated in 2023). - The StudyCAD web-learning platform and automated CAD grader supported self-paced student learning. The automated CAD grader would give students feedback as they created a complete bicycle using self-paced videos and other materials on the website. Once the student was satisfied with their grade for each part, they uploaded it to the website. This freed up a massive amount of time for 1:1 Teacher-student coaching. - I wrote a paper on the "Lean Education" principles behind this effort and presented it at an ASEE conference. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283230866_Enhancing_a_Blended_Learning_Approach_to_CAD_Instruction_Using_Lean_Manufacturing_Principles- The curriculum from the CAD class was also featured in WWU's Innovative Teaching Showcase. http://pandora.cii.wwu.edu/showcase2013/welch/default.asp- Over 1,000 students have used the StudyCAD curriculum during the 10 years that it was relevant.Beyond that, my favorite class was the "prototypes and shop skills" course I created for sophomore Industrial Design students. - This course was the first industrial design class for a group of around 30 students trying to get into the 12 student design program. During this intensive quarter students learned all the skills they needed to design and build a working flashlight prototype in the shop. The quarter culminated in an exhibition of the student's work. It was a transformative experience even for students who didn't make it into the program. -
Director Of Product DevelopmentNew Market Design Lab Dec 2008 - Mar 2012Until its acquisition in 2012, I led new Product Development for my client Envision Telepharmacy. Visited hospitals and retail pharmacies to conduct UX research, designed the web applications, managed a 3 person web development team to build the sites until we could hire a project manager.- Telepharmacy Cameras (retail & cleanroom). Designed and engineered the hardware, managed a 2 person team to build & ship the initial small batch production run.- Led on-site implementations. Installed hardware in hospital pharmacies and cleanrooms. Resolved technical issues (This was the age of Internet Explorer 7 and problematic hospital firewalls). Trained staff in Telepharmacy techniques.- Designed and built tradeshow displays. Gave customer demos during tradeshows.- Applied for and received a Telepharmacy Patent that was key during Envision's acquisition https://patents.google.com/patent/US10554937B2/en -
