I am currently a pre-med student at the University of North Texas. I hope to graduate in the fall of 2019 and eventually start medical school in the fall 2020 semester. Over the past several years dating back to my freshman year of high school, I have been working and volunteering in healthcare environments. I started volunteering at Baylor Carrollton during the summer of 2012 by assisting nurses and patients with their various needs. I would also help out in other departments throughout the hospital such as central supply, administration, and nutrition. By doing this for the following two summers, I gained a much greater understanding of how a hospital functions on a daily basis and the numerous people involved in running it. During my freshman year of college, I worked as a registered pharmacy technician at a local Walmart pharmacy for a few months and learned a great amount of information on specific medications. In addition, I was able to observe how pharmacists work on dealing with numerous healthcare professionals throughout the day in order to fulfill their tasks in the pharmacy and ultimately help the patients in need. I am currently working as a technician again at another Walmart while also volunteering at Baylor’s hospital pharmacy and understanding how the pharmaceutical process works in two completely different areas. I am about to start shadowing a doctor in order to learn more about how doctors approach their workload each day and how they talk with patients about specific health issues along with how they do the numerous procedures they encounter every day. Overall, I am a pre-med student who is ultimately trying to learn more about the healthcare industry and the numerous fields that are available within it.
