Hi, I am Jerlyn Teo, a student currently studying for a diploma in Early Childhood Development and Education graduating in April 2024. One quote that encapsulates my personal philosophy is from Maya Angelou, "You are the sum total of everything you've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it's all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that I try to make sure that my experiences are positive." This quote serves as a reminder that everything that we have done and experienced has an impact and we should be mindful of our words and actions and always strive to do our best with a positive mindset.I believe that every child and person should be treated without any stereotypes or preconceived biases and have equal rights and access to opportunities regardless of gender. Providing a safe and comforting environment for children under my care to explore their interests and grow into the person that they aspire to be is my goal as an Early Childhood educator. Through my 3 years of studies thus far, I have experienced 2 different center attachment opportunities in years 1 and 2 of my diploma studies at PCF Sparkletots @ Canberra and Little Seeds Preschool (Praiseland) with a total of more than 200 hours clocked in and was involved in 2 Co-Curricular Clubs such as the Ngee Ann Slowpitch Softball club and IMHope. The center attachments required me to help assist my class teachers with everyday routines, manage the children as a class, and even plan and conduct lessons with the children. This has helped me build on my patience and improve my conduct as a teacher, as I realized that I had certain traits that I need to work on such as my assertiveness and speaking to the children more. Softball taught me to teamwork and how to coordinate with others. IMHope is a volunteering club that interacts with, and plans activities for IMH residents to be engaged in, which taught me how to plan events and interact with others.My other work experiences are from previous part-time job opportunities, such as a fish stall crowd manager and as a part-time pet shop retailer. Through these part-time jobs, I have acquired conflict resolution, communication, and time management skills as they required me to interact and assist with customers and their pets regularly. The part-time pet shop retailer position also required me to manage inventory and the general upkeep of the store, which has taught me to be organized and diligent in all that I do.
