CurrentCurrently, radioactive waste is safely stored above ground. This is however only a short-term solution (100 years) since storage requires active management which cannot be guaranteed in the long term (10000 years). The long-lived waste can, therefore, best be disposed of in stable geological layers deep in the bedrock; geological disposal. With our current state of science and technology, geological disposal is the only solution which ensures that this waste will remain outside of the living environment (biosphere) of humans even after thousands of years. Research on geological disposal is an integral part of the Dutch policy for radioactive waste and is part of my current job by Covra.
