Between June 2010 and December 2011 I finalised my PhD thesis. In addition I was authoring and reviewing scientific articles in this guest position at the Faculty of Architecture, department Urbanism at Delft University of Technology.

In my PhD research I explored possible avenues for improving the embedding of knowledge on temporospatial activity and mobility behaviour of people in urban design and planning. The aim of the Thesis was to expand on design and planning theory. The Thesis comprises the analysis of two approaches: (1) the use of tracking technologies such as GPS in an urban design context, and (2) the so-called times-of-the-city approach originating in Italy. The analysis is framed by extensive theoretical work on the idea of the 'applicability gap' between research and design as well as an account of the relevance of social theory on timespace in urban and regional design and planning. I defended my Thesis in 2011.In addition to my Thesis work, I tutored in urban design and planning studios at MSc-level at Delft University of Technology as well as on BSc-level. In tutoring I value the self-learning capabilities of students and see my role as a tutor in facilitating reflection-in-action.I developed extensive experience as scientific and administrative book editor. Books that I edited are 'Urban Networks - Network Urbanism' by Prof. Gabriel Dupuy (Paris I - Sorbonne) in the series Design-Science-Planning (Technepress, 2008); and 'Urbanism On Track' (with co-editor Stefan van der Spek) (IOS Press, 2008). I did additional research on the development and desirability of the planning concept of the Dutch layers approach to spatial planning which distinguishes spatial planning tasks on three 'layers' - occupation, networks, substratum - as well as the task of connecting them.
