“THE GODS CAN SEE THEM”—TAUGHT BY PHIDIAS Zeus & IIt was at about the same time, at O.S.U. High Energy Physics during my stay as a Research Associate I, that I lived the story that conveyed to me what “perfection” means. For Drucker it is a story of the greatest sculptor of ancient Greece, Phidias. He was commissioned around 440 B.C. to make the statues that to this day, 2,400 years later, still stand on the roof of the Parthenon in Athens. They are considered among the greatest sculptures of the Western tradition. The statues were universally admired, but when Phidias submitted his bill, the city accountant of Athens refused to pay it. “These statues,” the accountant said, “stand on the roof of the temple, and on the highest hill in Athens. Nobody can see anything but their fronts. High Energy Physics ∙ Ohio State University ∙ Columbus, OH ∙ June 1990 – July 1992 Recorded and maintained electronic schematics in top order for replication of eight total control cards designed for ZEUS (particle accelerator) in Hamburg, Germany. Developed small tools strengthening hand and eye coordination at a microchip level. Hand wired and soldered all small components and organized their placement onto the control cards. Managed the placement of chips in relation to the needs of the department. Hand made cables for Ethernet connectivity for DOS and Macintosh computers. Developed a comprehension of wiring schematics for cabling and control cards. Began Internet usage for FTP and Telneting, including Pine & Elm email and newsgroups. Developed databases for inventory of all electronic components using Claris Works for Macintosh.
