Drove the technology due diligence effort leading to a successful exit by Brentwood Associates with the sale of Parchment to Instructure for $835m. Grew the technology team from 65 to 110+ people through organic growth and acquisition. The full team worked across five continents and seven countries. Led the technology due diligence and integration of four acquisitions supporting extension of capabilities and customer base, adding an international footprint, and the addition of a new verticals including dual enrollment, course sharing, and transfer articulation. Assumed technology ownership of enterprise-wide initiative with an incremental $3m budget to consolidate four legacy software systems into a single platform, migrate three data center facilities to AWS, upgrade 1600 customers to the built-out platform, and deprecate legacy systems.Other primary strategic areas of focus: created an information security department with a more proactive security posture, drove a ‘Follow the Sun’ model to support the global product footprint, and created a framework for M&A due diligence and integration.

Grew the software product development department through organic and inorganic expansion from 100 to 350+ employees. Resources are based in 12 Accuity offices (US, Europe, Asia) with roles including: software architects, developers, testers, SRE & dev ops engineers, data scientists, UI/UX designers, and support engineers.Slashed software OpEx budget by $millions through targeted use of off/nearshore partners, on-site contractors, and office consolidation. Led technology due diligence and integration of four successful acquisitions driving substantial revenue and cost synergies.Drove significant revenue including: instant screening for high-volume, real-time requirements of payment service providers and domestic payments, shift from name matching to machine learning payment screening, trade compliance dual-use goods and vessel tracking, plus rewrite of primary applications in multiple businesses. Other key initiatives include: data center and cloud migrations, application security zero tolerance, Agile/Scrum and SAFe implementation, data science center of excellence, central data lake/warehouse, innovation/product accelerator, product quality transformation, data privacy, distributed Dev Ops to centralized SRE team, and deepening product and technology collaboration.

Led 40-person software product development team across three locations and business lines. Transformed product technology team/capabilities by stopping rampant attrition, implementing separate SDLC for development (Agile/Scrum) and support (Kanban), moved all single tenant customers to latest software version, drove fungibility of staff for a single distributed team, established predictable team delivery, and implemented business case process based on Rational Unified Process.

Established the software development and quality assurance departments including hiring, managing, and developing team members and driving implementation and execution of successful software development and delivery processes.Started the first development program management office (PMO) by founding the Technology Steering Committee which created the first product roadmap, enterprise prioritization process, and support repeatable delivery on business commitments.Provided tactical management of Enterprise Systems Operations team to support of over 350 client websites including: Staples, Victoria’s Secret, Home Depot, and Petco. Holiday volumes were maintained in excess of 5000 hits per second with response times averaging 400 milliseconds.Implemented and executed (by serving as Scrum Master) an Agile/Scrum software development framework including: product backlog, sprints, daily scrum, and retrospectives.Rebranded and reorganized flat technology team into roles under Software Development and Quality Assurance, SaaS Operations, and Data/Analytics to better define responsibilities and drive results.Led migration to Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server 2010 using source control, continuous integration, daily builds, automated deployments with testing.

Served as interim CTO of Red Envelope acquisition following working closely with the departing CTO to develop a comprehensive acquisition integration plan addressing sustained employee morale, operating budgets, business continuity, contingency plans, and vendor contract renegotiation. Executed, as CTO, finalizing with office and data center closure.Defended company patents at the Washington, D.C. USPTO as a co-author and named inventor.

Spearheaded the technology department’s Valentine’s Day 2008 preparation shortly after the CIO resigned. Resulted in our system shipping more than 1,000,000 orders that week and taking 14,000 orders in our peak hour.Led on-site and offshore engineering teams with creation of flat organization into four teams and supported business growth through many successful releases including: HighJump Warehouse Management System (WMS), shopping and order process site rewrite, and data warehouse implementation.Technology due diligence lead for Red Envelope and BodyBuilding.com (Liberty Media) acquisitions.Successfully delivered more projects to business by leveraging engineering interrupts, “micro-pipelines”, moving from single to multiple projects assigned to each engineer.Provided a learning opportunity for a UCSD undergrad student while adding a labor source to build our testing automation framework with our first engineering intern.Only employee to receive consecutive leadership awards in 2005 and 2006 for providing exceptional value to our customers and dedication to nurturing employee growth.

Architected systems leveraging SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) in our .Net e-commerce platform (using C# web services and applications, SQL 2000 databases, and Progress Sonic MQ) to allow business growth and handling of peak holiday traffic.Ensured repeatable IT projects through relevant and consistent process with an efficient software development life cycle from requirements through deployment.Developed cohesive IT/Business partnership to understand their needs, meet immediate ones, and provide solution extensibility for future needs.

Led the largest product development project in company history to reengineer the COM+ VB fulfillment system’s tight coupling with FedEx into a SOA .Net multiple carrier system with drop-ship capability.Analyzed the purchasing, warehouse processes, quality control, and shipping resulting in company implementation of HighJump Warehouse Management System.

Engineered a platform capability for partners to use our e-commerce system to sell and fulfill perishable goods. Although the project was only targeted at a Martha Stewart co-branded website, the flexibility of the solution allowed the launch of two new brands, Cherry Moon Farms and Uptown Prime, and facilitated our IPO.Delivered increased conversion and website performance as an integral team member on a project that began by dissecting and diagramming business processes and culminated in delivery of our first .Net system.Removed database load and allowed website to perform faster by creating a Classic ASP tool to load home page content (and soon many other pages) from SQL databases into a static include file.

Generated revenue for ADN and strengthened relationship with a key client as lead for a voting resource site for KPBS.com. Led to private consulting work within KPBS after ADN ceased operations.As part of the e-commerce software team, developed enhancements for flagship e-commerce suite, eStoreManager, and led the development of a web site creation tool, eSiteStarter.

In addition to software development, played an integral role in this five person startup; involved in new business development, marketing, customer management, venture capital funding, and .com domain litigation.

Developed the client side VB shipping applications as part of the only Windows development group in the company.
