As an Air Force "brat", I chased my father, in his service to this country, around the world, including the Orient: Taiwan (2 years) and Japan (3 years), plus assignments in Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, & Washington. Growing up as a gypsy, I had an opportunity to develop friendships that would not have been possible had we remained in our home state of Louisiana. It also gave me the strength/drive to work with a myriad of social service agencies in a variety of cities after graduating with a Masters in Social Welfare: psychiatric hospitals, institutions for the developmentally delayed (thankfully almost non-existent these days), mental health centers, child protection agencies (including a pilot program for under-age sex abuse victims in New Orleans - that was the first time I truly understood how vocalional experience can leave scars), adoptions, public school systems, Medicaid agencies providing in-home care to forestall nursing home placement, and a brief stint counseling soldiers/their families as he prepared for overseas deployment: Afghanistan and Iraq. I retired from the school system after 30 years in 2009. I still felt too energetic to sit on a porch and watch the world pass, so I re-entered the work force in 2010 (after 2 trips to Europe) and continue to seek the next challenge, the next person to assist, the next injustice to tackle. The only thing that surprises me these days is the mirror - who is that older man? I have no medical issues, take no medications, & have the luxury (thanks to the old retirement check) to take on the job(s) that challenge/interest me, regardless of salary.. I've had a satisfying ride and life promises to provide many more welcome sunrises.............
