Jerry Meyerle is a national security professional with 17 years of experience leading complex research projects at CNA on a wide range of topics across the military services and interagency. He has also served as an embedded advisor in various military commands – Navy, Marine Corps, and Joint, including several contingency deployments. His expertise is in defense policy, posture and organization, warfighting, strategic and operational planning, and contingency operations. He has led studies for the Navy, Marine Corps, Combatant Commands, Joint Staff, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He has also worked with the State Department and Intelligence Community. He has served as a CNA field representative with the Marine Corps in Afghanistan, with the Navy on a carrier strike group in the Persian Gulf, and at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa. At CENTCOM, he participated in commander-level deliberations and staff-level operational and strategic planning on a wide range of issues, including planning with the other geographic and functional combatant commands. His work has focused on helping senior defense leaders and their planning staffs approach complex issues and make better decisions. Current and recent studies focus on revising global command and control among the Combatant Commands, Middle East defense posture, worldwide crisis response, and the future of US commercial shipping, the merchant marine, and commercial shipbuilding. His background is a mix of academic social science, advanced qualitative and quantitative analytics, managing research staff, and experience working directly with military forces, commanders, and their planning staffs on difficult, unstructured, and often highly contentious problems at various levels of authority. He has a PhD. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Virginia. He is also an adjunct professor in the Fleet Seminar Program at the Naval War College where he teaches Joint Maritime Operations.
