I am a team member working in the Enterprise Office Service Delivery team.Part of my role is to coordinate the decommissioning of EOL or redundant network and other equipment. This requires ensuring the correct logical de-installation and wiping of network equipment where appropriate and ensuring physically that there are no storage mediums left in any of the devices, before organizing for the devices to be picked up and moved to the next stage. In this role, I am required to coordinate with a number of people both within IBM and with people from external service providers, which has also been a very hands on and rewarding experience.Another major part of my role is to build software to aid or automate regular business processes involved in the day to day activities of my team members. The current project I have been working on is developing a web application using Java EE, Java script, and JSF technology in eclipse, whilst using maven as my project builder and dependency manager. The application runs on IBM Bluemix and is designed to aid in spreadsheet processing. This project has greatly advanced my skills in web technology and experience in the above mentioned technologies. In order to build the above application I've also had to build my skills and knowledge in applying formulas and equation in Microsoft Excel.
Software Developer
After my internship at WTG I was offered casual employment until my next industry placement in January 2017. After doing a rotation in the Embedded Engineering Team developing a Telematics solution suite, I chose to return to this team for the duration of my contract. The Embedded Engineering team is responsible for developing among other projects, a Telematics solution suite for tracking data on land transport vehicles. My main responsiblity in this team was the development and maintenance of a middleware server and database which receives all telematics data from test devices and production devices in the field, and handling, saving and responding to that data as necessary. The server was written using test driven development (using NUNIT) in C#, while saving to a Microsoft Sql Server as its Database Engine. On a day to day basis I was in charge of implementing new features and bug fixes to the middleware server as the team required it. This responsibility required a deep knowledge of the OSI Internet Protocol to understand how devices communicate to the server, and make use of information made available to us through packet sniffers. My secondary role was to help contribute to the source code which runs on the Telematics devices themselves. This gave me an interesting exposure to the constraints and concerns surrounding writing code for embedded devices. Development for these devices was done using Python, MicroPython and C. This also required knowledge on how to handle the electronic devices themselves, how to change the source code running, and basic troubleshooting techniques. The embedded team at WTG is relatively small, allowing me to gain exposure to the activities of other members of the group such as PCB Design, Basic Electronics Principles, Programming the boards, designing an operating system for the devices, and how different components on the board provide data to the MicroControllers to process into information.
