My practice has evolved during my 40 years in the profession. My work is now concentrated in two primary areas: Mediation and Arbitration, and Higher Education Law. My mediation practice developed alongside my work as a civil trial lawyer. I have mediated more than 2,000 cases in a wide range of areas, including business disputes, construction cases, employment discrimination cases, personal injury actions, medical and legal malpractice cases, probate disputes, and property actions. I have been appointed and recommended as a mediator by judges in the Maine state and federal courts. I regularly serve as an arbitrator in personal injury, construction and commercial arbitration matters.In the area of higher education, I serve as outside general counsel to Colby College. I counsel colleges and universities in a wide range of legal areas, including student discipline, Title IX, employment and tenure, FERPA, academic freedom, and risk management. I am approved panel counsel for United Educators insurance company. My ADR and higher education practices have blended in situations where I mediate informal resolution agreements between complainants and respondents, or serve as a hearing officer, in Title IX sexual harassment cases.I am listed in Best Lawyers in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Construction Litigation, Labor and Employment Litigation, Bet-the-Company Litigation, and Arbitration and Mediation.
