Jerry L. Hawkins is an artist, educator, archivist, historian, a 2020-22 Presidential Leadership Scholar and Executive Producer, Researcher and Narrator for the 2024 “Recovering The Stories: Exploring the History and Resilience in Dallas Communities” PBS/KERA Documentary Series. For almost seven years, Jerry served as the Founding Executive Director of Dallas Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation, an Initiative of W.K. Kellogg Foundation & Communities Foundation of Texas. Jerry is the co-founder of The Imagining Freedom Institute (The IF Institute), a national research-based leadership group that helps organizations and institutions understand the historical context to contemporary issues of place, race and space. Jerry was formerly the Founding Project Director of Bachman Lake Together, an initiative of The Dallas Foundation & Zero To Five Funders Collaborative, and Director of Children's Services at the Wilkinson Center in East Dallas/Southeast Dallas.Jerry is the writer and curator of “Archiving The Future” for the Fall 2024 edition of the Nasher Sculpture Center’s biannual NASHER Magazine, a recent Adjunct Professor at Texas Christian University, a 2024-2025 Institute For Nonprofit Practice's Black Leadership Institute Fellow, a 2022-2023 Independent Sector Bridging Fellow, a 2019 Leadership Arts Institute Fellow with the Business Council for the Arts, a TxDOT Community Connection Guidelines for Rural African American Communities Working Group Member, a former Dallas County Historical Commission Member, a City of Dallas' City Plan Commission Comprehensive Land Use Committee Appointee, served on Dallas ISD’s Resource Equity and Racial Equity Working Groups, and the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas/PolicyLink 'Pathways to Work' Workforce Equity Advisory Council. Jerry also serves on the boards of Young Leaders, Strong City and AccessH2O. Jerry has been awarded PBS/KERA's American Graduate Champion in 2017, was a 2022 and 2023 nominee for "Best Community Leader" by The Dallas Weekly, The City of Dallas “Equity Pioneer Award” in 2022, and was selected as one of the “Dallas 500 Most Powerful Business Leaders in North Texas” in 2021 and 2022 by D CEO/D Magazine. Jerry’s first editorial offering, A People’s History of Dallas, will be published in late 2025 by Deep Vellum Books. Jerry received his undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and Child & Family Services from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and his Master's degree in Education from Northeastern Illinois University's Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies.

Black Leadership Institute FellowInstitute For Nonprofit Practice Jan 2024 - PresentBoston, Ma, UsThe Black Leadership Institute (BLI) connects, inspires, and uplifts senior-level Black leaders shaping social impact across the country and across sectors. Through transformative programming, BLI supports Black leaders with the resources, network, and community to build upon their social, financial, knowledge, and cultural capital as they step into positions of greater power and influence.BLI brings together a national cohort of Black leaders in senior roles across the nonprofit, philanthropic, public, and private sectors who are leading in fields, or on issues, with significant outcome disparities for Black people – such as workforce development, incarceration and recidivism, health care and well-being, environmental justice and education – for an 18-month fellowship program.The BLI program serves 30 senior-level Black leaders from 6 cities across the country. The program will connect Fellows both nationally and locally, allowing them to develop strong regional and national bonds of shared commitment, support, and purpose.The program includes:18 months of programming, including 12 months of in-person regional convenings and virtual sessions with the full national cohort, followed by 6 months of individual, virtual executive coaching.2 in-person retreats in locations of significance to the Black experience in the US and to the growth of Black power and influence into the future.Sessions that anchor on critical topics that enable Black leaders to identify and implement new strategies for building greater power and influence in their communities. Fellows will explore multiple forms of power, currency, and exchange through the lenses of social, financial, knowledge, and cultural capital.A focus on cultivating joy and renewal through a pedagogy grounded in deep personal connection, community building, mindfulness, well-being, and the intersection of self-awareness and leadership.A building and strengthening of local and national cross-sector networks. -

Members of the Institute are selected annually from a field of applicants who seek to learn valuable skills in leadership, non-profit board best practices, and knowledge of critical needs of North Texas cultural organizations. Following graduation, Leadership Arts Institute graduates are prepared to pursue board of directors placement with area arts and cultural organizations.The Business Council for the Arts and its Leadership Arts Institute were founded in 1989 by philanthropist, noted art collector, and NorthPark Center developer Raymond D. Nasher, for whom the city’s Nasher Sculpture Center is named. Each year the Leadership Arts Institute class selects an arts project. This year, Hawkins participated in successfully raising more than $20,000 for construction of acontemporary light and art installation in the new Café Momentum Service Center in the Dallasunderground beneath Thanksgiving Square. The Center serves at-risk youth who are employedby Café Momentum.Notably, North Texas’ non-profit arts and cultural organizations contribute $1.5 billionannually to the region’s economy, making it the fifth largest regional arts economy in the U.S.,according to Business Council for the Arts CEO Katherine Wagner. -
Founding Project Director, Bachman Lake TogetherThe Dallas Foundation Apr 2015 - Dec 2017Dallas, Texas, UsEstablished and lead the work of the only placed-based early childhood collective impact initiative in North Texas, Bachman Lake Together, which is committed to serving over 1,000 parents and 1,000 children of the Bachman Lake community of North Dallas every year through dual generational early childhood programming and parent-led community leadership. Co-designed and co-managed the construction, opening and operation of the $2,000,000+ Bachman Lake Together Family Center, a 20,000 sq. ft. community campus for co-located services that included 5 high-quality early childhood classrooms, 2 Early Head Start Montessori classrooms, 3 adult classrooms, 13 partner organization office spaces, a multipurpose meeting space, a kitchen/dining area, outdoor deck/family space, a Montessori playground, a community garden and family mini-golf holes. Coordinated the recruitment, vetting, collaboration, program delivery, relationships and retention of 30 partner organizations. Managed a backbone team of staff, including a Program Manager, a Financial Empowerment Coach and a Parent Engagement Coordinator. Lead development efforts for the project’s fundraising, including all grant writing, major gifts, individual giving and corporate support, raising over $1,000,000. Created and balanced a $900,000 annual budget, including accounting, invoicing, payments and payroll systems. Reported to the Zero to Five Funders Collaborative Steering Committee and the Bachman Lake Together Board. Managed the project’s various collective impact data collection and evaluative methods. Researched and provided wider community leadership on the topics of early childhood education, collective impact, community and parent engagement, equity and population-level community change. Co-designed and provided content for the Zero to Five Funders Collaborative & Bachman Lake Together websites. Created and designed a year-end annual report detailing every aspect of the project for funders, partners and the community. -
Director Of Children'S ServicesThe Wilkinson Center Jul 2011 - Feb 2015Managed the Children’s Services Department of the Wilkinson Center, which includes a staff of 30+, and the operation and implementation of the CLIMB After School Enrichment Program and the Explore To Inspire DFW! Summer Enrichment Program, both which annually serve over 600 children ages 5 -13 in underserved East Dallas communities; I also created and successfully piloted a life skills program for 12-16 year old adolescents entitled REAL TALK. I hired, trained and currently coach Site Managers, DISD Para-professionals, Mentors & Tutors for 7 unique CLIMB sites located in Dallas ISD schools and community organizations. I assured delivery of high quality education programs, and facilitate monthly staff reporting systems; I developed and maintain partnerships with Dallas ISD, DASN, Big Thought, AT&T Performing Arts Center, Dallas Arboretum and The Dallas Opera; Created, updated and designed children’s programming, educational curriculum and alternative educational strategies; Joined the leadership team at the Wilkinson Center to plan the future of Children Services, and worked with development staff to provide grant writing assistance for future fundraising efforts.

Leadership FellowD Magazine Sep 2013 - May 2014Dallas, Texas, UsD Academy is a leadership program designed to educate members of the creative class in Dallas on the workings of the city. The program is underwritten by the owners of D Magazine. D Academy provides a series of crash courses on a variety of topics, including healthcare; art and culture; education; criminal justice; the environment; race, poverty, and class; infrastructure; philanthropy; and the city’s brand. Executive coach Robin Pou provided the class with leadership training.The application process is rigorous, but the commitment is moreso. The leadership group works on Big D Reads, a community-wide reading experience for Dallas, and the volunteer hours required, especially in the spring, are substantial. Big D Reads is a community service project designed to immerse Dallas in a shared reading experience, with a specific focus on ninth-grade Dallas ISD students. The program is under way now and will culminate with a citywide initiative throughout the entire month of April. Big D Reads will conduct dozens of special events centered on one book, including an opening event, a closing event, poetry slams, educational events/speakers, DISD enrichment programs, movie screenings, a festival at Klyde Warren Park, and as many other community interactions as budget allows. At the same time, 20,000 books will be distributed to DISD ninth-graders, as well as to DART riders, visitors in hospital waiting rooms, and all branches of the Dallas Public Library. -
