Upperman High School; Baxter, Tennessee

Provided vision and leadership to facilitate an atmosphere focused on excellence in teaching and learning while involving all stakeholders in the process. Fostered the development and implementation of programs and initiatives that increased rigor, strengthened the connections between academic knowledge and applied learning, and sustained an atmosphere that supported risk-taking, divergent thinking, and personal responsibility.Initiated a three year action plan to expand Advanced Placement offerings from a single course of A.P. Calculus to at least one in each of the core academic areas: math, science, social studies, and English. In addition to increasing the offerings, barriers removed to provide all students greater access to courses. Intricately involved in the $19.6 million "New" Upperman High School building project consisting of an 180,000 sq.ft. facility on 90+ acres with multiple athletic fields and structures. Orchestrated the move from the existing facility to the new facility at mid-year, which involved the selection and creation of two separate school staffs resulting from the creation of a new 9-12 facility along with a restructured middle school configuration in the existing facility.Increased the Career and Technical program offerings to include a full-time Health Science program.Revitalized the fine arts programs through deliberate steps of hiring outstanding specialists in the various areas then relentlessly supporting their efforts through word and action.Championed the use of technology as an essential tool for teaching and learning. Upperman High School is a wireless environment with a student to computer ratio of 3 to 1. Teachers and students regularly utilize applications to generate knowledge and extend learning before, during, and after school hours.Established a personal accountability system for student conduct providing an objective, quantifiable method to demonstrate citizenship.
