I manage a small team of highly talented and professional engineers that work on the control plane for our media pipeline that powers Warner Bros. Discovery's live streaming offerings.

I served as tech lead on a team of up to 5 engineers working on workflow automation for iStreamPlanet's customer events. Events in this context are things like sports games and other content that typically drives the most viewership when it is happening live. We provided services and UIs that handled scheduling, managing, and operating these events. The automation we developed interacted with almost every major service at iStreamPlanet including control plane, transcoding & publishing, and direct-to-consumer. I worked closely with Product Owners, Event Operators, and my fellow engineers to develop REST APIs, UIs, and event-driven(think aws lambda triggered by various mechanisms) services to develop this automation. I began my role as tech lead by leading design discussions, reviewing code, and coding. However, as the early years of the pandemic took their toll I quickly found myself taking on more and more engineering manager duties. The folks on my team were all new to iStreamPlanet, so I found that I was able to add more value by focusing on driving clarity with product, creating a trusting environment with an emphasis on ship-to-learn mindset, and helping my teammates resolve any issues preventing them from doing their best work. I really enjoyed this work, so as iStreamPlanet got rolled up into the larger WarnerBros. Discovery company, I officially transitioned from a Senior Dev to an Engineering Manager.

As a software engineer at iStreamPlanet I developed REST APIs for control plane services. My work on these services consolidated multiple disparate, manual, and error-prone workflows for configuring live transcoders into a single unified system. This project started specifically for one media property, but eventually every single transcoder that iStreamPlanet spunup was configured through this system.I also worked on a highly visible project that was critical to the successful delivery of March Madness on OTT platforms. This project challenged me in multiple ways. Due to hard redundancy requirements, I wholly owned and managed a cross region and hybrid on-prem/cloud postgresql deployment with automatic intra-region failover using docker, ansible, Amazon DMS, and pgpool2. Due to the project's highly visible nature, I also rapidly developed on-call support skills such as a mitigation-focused mindset and the ability to communicate effectively across multiple teams and various levels(e.g. my manager, directors, CTO).My experience year-over-year on the MarchMadness project led to my designation as the tech lead for the project in 2020. There, I oversaw 6 early-career contractors to improve the resiliency of the services. I served as an official mentor for one of the contractors. All 6 were converted to FTE employees and found success at various teams at iStreamPlanet.

Database Crawlers• Worked on a small team to design and implement configurable system built on java 8 and Dropwizard to stream real time updates from databases to HDFS. • Technologies: Java 8, Dropwizard, Avro, Oracle, SQL Server, AvroRaw ODS• Enhanced dynamic ETL project and configuration generator to support multiple data serialization formats to Vertica tables. This project loads data for more than one thousand tables where some tables have on the order of billions of rows. • Monitored the health of the scheduled ETL runs for over a dozen clients and fixed issues.• Technologies: Java 8, CDH5, Crunch, Oozie, Avro, Protobuf, VerticaPophealth Analytics ETL Platform• Implemented loading strategy that stages serialized Vertica rows in HDFS before copying to Vertica. This replaced the previous strategy of staging data in temporary Vertica tables and relieved impact on the Vertica cluster, enabling it to handle more loads for more clients. This strategy is currently in use for all the team's ETL projects.• Technologies: Java 6, Crunch, Oozie, VerticaContent Authoring Service• Fixed Universe updation capability and added capabilities to Java RESTful webservice for creating content in SAP Business Objects.• Technologies: Java 6, Jersey, SAP Business Objects SDKBI Tools• Tested Tableau 9 to Tableau 10 upgrade on Openstack in order to discover and resolve issues before upgrading in development and production environments.• Technologies: Tableau 9 & 10, Windows 2012 Server R2, OpenstackOther responsibilities• Mentored engineers and interns as well as documented new or updated processes to facilitate knowledge sharing among the team. Documentation included how-to wiki pages and videos.• Supported web based analytics solution built on Hadoop, Oozie, Java, SAP Business Objects, and Tableau.• Managed deployment process from releasing code artifacts to deploying Oozie Coordinators, web services, and BI content updates in production.
