•Conducted experiments on a laboratory fault in PMMA (plexiglas) monitored by an array of acoustic emissions (seismic) sensors, eddy current displacement sensors, and strain gauges.•Developed a python package for personal use based on pyASDF to consistently and repeatably analyze simultaneous time series data recorded with different start times, formats, and sampling frequencies.•Adapted strong motion seismic inversion methods for use at the laboratory scale. Focused on linear least-squares inversion of underconstrained problems.•Significant use of fourier analysis and digital filtering in sensor/system calibration and data analysis.•Maintained and improved physical experiment setup and sensor array. E.g. produced desired PMMA surface properties through polishing, sand blasting, and laser engraving.•Studied frictional faulting, fault mechanics at the asperity level (kinematics and dynamics), slow slip, the accumulation of preslip.•Coursework following the Systems MS/PhD track including: Sensors & Signal Interpretation, Scalable Spatial Analytics (ML), Energy Systems & Control, Optimal Control ofPDEs, addl. seismology, geology, mechanics, and mentoring courses
