    I participate in the design and data analysis of nuclear fusion experiments. This includes the analysis and modelling of thermal and non-thermal ion dynamics in fusion plasmas. I also take part in the operation and design of microwave-based systems for characterizing fusion plasmas at existing and forthcoming fusion experiments, including ITER. Finally, I manage the DTU Fusor experiment, a small plasma experiment that uses electric fields to confine and heat plasma to fusion-relevant temperatures.

    I was awarded a research grant by the Carlsberg Foundation to carry out a theoretical project on the prospects for mapping hot gas in the Universe using hyperfine structure transitions of ions in the (largely undetected) intergalactic medium from which galaxies form and grow. The main tools were a combination of numerical modelling and results from cosmological simulations. In addition, I supervised a number of undergraduate- and PhD student projects.

    As part of an Einstein Fellowship grant, I carried out a project entitled "The interface between galaxies and galaxy groups", focussed on elucidating the poorly understood coupling between the evolution of galaxy groups, in which most galaxies reside, and that of their galaxies. This involved the use of X-ray, UV, optical, IR, and radio data combined with numerical modelling and cosmological simulations. I also supervised a number of summer research projects by visiting PhD students.
