I am a production engineer, true believer in the Lean principles, and fanatic about reinventing the way we make, sell, and buy clothes. I founded Son of a Tailor not because I was in love with clothing, but because of the vast opportunities to improve the clothing industry for everybody involved; customers, employees, and the environment.Early in my career I had a crush on Lean Manufacturing and the Toyota Production System. It amazed me to see how the Japanese disrupted mass manufacturing and its logic. For years, I worked as a management consultant optimizing supply chains across sectors applying the Lean principles, which for me embody uncompromising focus on waste reduction, relentless focus on quality and just-in-time principles.The clothing industry, however, hadn’t adopted Lean. Instead, it turned out that it seemed to be madly in love with inventories and very long lead times, turning a blind eye at inhumane and intransparent working conditions. Rather than adopting technology, the industry had simply been shifting production to countries with less working regulations to keep prices low. The arrival of ecommerce didn’t change things for the better. On the contrary. Another systemic issue became apparent: most of the clothes just don’t fit. We’ve all been there: you find something you like, try it on, and nothing fits as it should. As a customer this means a trip to the post office to send the garments back, for the environment this means an enormous amount of waste as many of the returned clothes and stock-items will never be sold.After working a few years with tech and ecommerce, I set out to change this. Son of a Tailor was born. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences you can imagine. In April 2022, 125k customers turned to our way of buying. From seamstresses to customer success, we are +100 people working constantly to remove waste from the fashion industry and we have reduced CO2 levels to half compared to regular apparel consumption.
