In the Inflammation Research Group, our aim is to understand the damage that prolonged or unresolved inflammation does to the body, and how this contributes to the development of heart disease. For most of us, our immune system is very good at protecting us from nasty germs, however, unresolved inflammation is damaging to your body, resulting in inflammatory disease. Inflammatory diseases include, but are not limited to, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chrohn's disease and asthma. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the blood vessels that supply your heart and body with blood. It is caused by a build-up of white blood cells, which are trying, in vain, to remove fats (e.g. bad cholesterol) from the blood. This build-up causes hardening of the blood vessels that progresses slowly over many years and can result in a blockage, which causes a heart attack or stroke, depending on the location of the affected blood vessel. My research is focused on understanding the effects of compounds called "chlorinated nucleosides" on white blood cells. These compounds are formed as a result of inflammatory damage to the DNA of cells. No one knows yet whether these modified DNA building blocks are a cause or consequence of inflammatory disease. However, my studies suggest that these compounds may be a contributing factor to prolonged inflammation by changing the way white blood cells behave.
