Jess Melkman has a Bachelor of Art Education/Bachelor of Design and has been a Visual Arts, STEM and Gifted and Talented teacher at Mosman High School since 2005. Not only was she the recipient of the NSW Ministers Quality Teaching Award in 2010, she has also supported her students in achieving similar accolades. While studying her Masters of Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design in an online learning environment, she realized the potential this style of learning could have in the classroom. Her classroom practice evolved to suit the needs of her future focused learners. Utilizing authentic learning experiences and creative and critical thinking, Jess has harnessed inquiry based learning to create a classroom that promotes problem solving. Jess has introduced STEM to Mosman High School and leads innovative programs that leverage transdisciplinary practices to encourage students to look at big picture challenges and create realistic solutions. Jess has presented at conferences such as ISTE Conference 2013 in San Antonio, EdmodoCon2011 (A Virtual International Conference) Inspire:Innovate ICT conferences, The 1:1 Unconference, the 2010 and 2012 GATS: Unleashing the Gifted Potential, DER Innovative leaders forums, Visual Arts Conferences and STEM conferences as well as numerous staff development days. Jess has developed many online resources that encourage and foster collaboration and creativity in the classroom.
