Before I started working at LCC, I had known for some time that I wanted to move into the charity sector so I was grateful for an opportunity where I could use my working hours to help better the world that also encompasses my love of cycling. My role requires me to juggle multiple competing tasks and be organised enough to do this. My tasks include supporting our network of volunteers by answering their queries and giving them training when needed; creating, editing and sending out newsletters on behalf of our local groups and the campaigns team; updating people’s details on our CRM platform; writing, editing and posting content on LCC’s website and Twitter; collaborating with the campaigns team to plan and carry out campaigning activities such as events, protests and online actions; conducting research within our volunteer network and analysing the data; providing administrative support to the campaigns team as needed; and managing the campaigns inbox by triaging emails and responding to queries from LCC members and the general public.

Like a regular taxi, working as a cycle taxi pilot involves taking passengers from A to B except we’re on a big four-seater non-standard cycle where passengers have the option to pedal. Many passengers are 50+ and need to be taken to the shops to get groceries or community events in their local area. It’s a very social role and part of the job is engaging people in conversation and looking after their well-being during trips. It also involves finding good routes in Newham and Tower Hamlets, navigating London’s roads safely and managing time to ensure passengers are picked up when they expect to be.Assisting at team building events involves unloading and setting up the team building equipment, facilitating a portion of the team building itself so participants know what’s going on and packing up and organising kit when the event is over.

I joined Balfe’s Bikes during a time of huge growth within the company and I helped open and run their Islington branch. The main focus of my role was managing the order book for the store which involved following up with suppliers, communicating with customers, ensuring that stock needed to fulfil orders arrived at the store and liaising with members of the team. This was during the Covid bike boom which meant navigating high demand with a sometimes unreliable supply and managing customers’ expectations accordingly. I also managed orders that came through our online store, trained members of the team on new processes, performed stock takes and responded to customer queries over email and the phone. I learnt a lot during my time at Balfe’s and it helped me hone my organisation skills and my ability to create order in a busy environment with lots of moving parts.

CAYA was one of my first jobs after moving to London and it was a great opportunity to meet new people and level up my latte art skills. My role involved making food and drinks, ordering from suppliers, opening and closing shop, managing the cafe’s workspace and ensuring everything was running smoothly in the cafe and customers had a good experience.

As a freelancer, I learnt how to be a 3-in-1 admin, finance and copywriting person. It also proved to me that I was able to motivate myself to work.One of my favourite clients during this time was a local makers market who gave me a lot of creative freedom and interesting projects to work on. Writing for them also gave me many opportunities to use humour in my copy, which is something I really enjoy. Another of my clients used design thinking in their approach and as this was something I’d studied at ad school, it was great to put it into practice. This job also required me to do research, analyse data and distill complex information into instruction manuals that were easy for the layperson to comprehend.

At PlusNarrative, I wrote and edited copy for social media platforms, blog posts, newsletters, press releases and marketing packs. It was a highly collaborative environment and with no traffic manager in the team, I was skilled at managing my tasks and meeting tight deadlines.

MADE was a digital agency and during my time there I worked closely with a community manager to come up with engaging content for a variety of brands on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram; along with the odd copy edit. MADE also had a daily creative challenge where we would redesign the logo on the agency’s Facebook page to reflect something topical and I would submit witty copy to (hopefully) accompany it.

Sheet Street is an affordable homeware retailer and in 2013, they launched their online store. This was a holiday job while I was in ad school where I wrote product descriptions for the online store. As there were many similar items, it pushed me to constantly come up with new ideas and I can now describe a curtain tie-back in about fifty different ways.

JHBLive was an entertainment website showcasing all the latest events in Johannesburg and I took and edited photos of people at these events for their online gallery. It was a fun job that taught me how to approach people and work within a variety of lighting conditions.

Towards the end of my photography course, I assisted at a production company. This involved doing research for shoots and being present on set to help organise props. Most of my time there was spent sourcing items for a somewhat gruesome shoot and I had to get very creative with my sources, even arranging a visit to the local university's entomology department.

Activate is the student newspaper at Rhodes University and I took photos for them on a fortnightly basis. These photos covered a variety of topics from public health to student trends and anything else that was newsworthy at the time.

At my first job, I helped customers find DVDs and gave them advice when they were battling to decide on which film to watch. The job also involved sorting DVDs into their correct sections, operating the till, cashing up as well as opening and closing the shop. This is where I learnt to speak confidently over the phone (not easy as a quiet 16-year-old trying to convince people to return their late DVDs) and interact with a variety of customers. The shop was in a seaside town popular with holidaymakers so it was a treat to meet new people who had come from afar and help provide them with some quality home entertainment for when they weren't on the beach.
