Born and raised in Colorado, Jess earned her B.A. in Chemistry/Theatre Arts at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA. That’s right, she’s not just a pretty face! Upon graduation in 2006, she took a job as an analytical chemist with a pharmaceutical company in the Philadelphia area but left the industry in 2011 to pursue her acting career full-time. That venture bright Jess to New Zealand in 2015. Then In 2017, Jess completed her Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) degree with Distinction and received the Excellence in Teaching award. Jess has been working as a secondary science and chemistry teacher in New Zealand since 2018. She has also remained active in theatre: most notably producing and starring in three devised contemporary dance/physical theatre shows, performing in multiple Shakespeare productions and choreographing two high school productions.

No Place Like explored the concept of home – what it means to us, how we reflect it, and how we create it. Told through real-life memories and anecdotes, this piece explored the kaleidoscopic landscape of forgotten homes, broken promises, and new beginnings – where the personal is recognized as the universal, confessed secrets are communal affirmation of shared fears, and we see ourselves reflected and celebrated in each other. For Kaleid's piece for Philadelphia's 2015 Mz. Fest (Take/Sacrifice), I was a co-creator and performer. Take/Sacrifice explores this space of desire, a landscape littered with those we have sacrificed to secure the things we want. Surrounded by iconic figures and archeological mysteries, our wishes become reflections of ourselves – what we want from the world, how we want the world to behave, and the lengths we are willing to go to make it so. What do we cling to? What do we want so much that we’ll destroy each other for it? Show less

My primary role was portraying Betsy Ross (credited for making the first American flag) at the Betsy Ross House. In this role, I worked as Betsy in her upholstery shop, and as guests came through, greet them (often times by trying to get them to agree to place an order for some upholstery), talked to them about Betsy’s life and answer any questions. I brought history to life and created a memorable experience that left guests feeling like they actually just spoke with Betsy Ross herself, and if I did my job, they learned something too! As a storyteller, I performed in a variety of programming, most recently in what is called a Storystroll. In this program, I guided school groups of up to 30-40 youths plus chaperones through historic Old City Philadelphia, stopping to tell stories about American history in an hour long tour of where America was founded.
