It introduces juniors and seniors to academic research and to effective strategies for getting into and graduating from PhD programs.Title and abstract of my research:“The fluidity of the 1.5 narrative: redefining and forming identity by way of Oregon and abroad; a collection of female testimonios.”Research on Mexican-migrants in the United States usually focus on the 1st and 2nd generations. Migrants who exit their home country and set roots in the United States are 1st generation while their U.S.-born children are 2nd generation. Often overlooked by the complexities of the two is the 1.5 generation: migrants who were brought to the United States as children and have been socialized here. The 1.5 generation has become a consistent force in the political agenda of undocumented people, but many have also returned to Mexico due to a battery of circumstance. To what degree does the later group adhere to the paradigm of the 1.5 narrative in the United States and abroad? What are understudied identity politics of the 1.5 generation and how do these identities inform policy?Building on theories of transnationalism, and migration, these questions explore the themes of identity, the borderlands, and globalization through the employment of qualitative methods including semi-structured interviews, participant observation and oral herstories, such as testimonios - authentic narrative, told by a witness who is moved to narrate by the urgency of a situation - with six women on both sides of the US-Mexico border.

Washington County Museum

"The Washington County Museum ignites the imagination and brings to life the diverse cultures that so richly define this remarkable region."Americans All: The Bracero Program in Washington County:After the bombing of Pearl Harbor the United States enlisted huge numbers of citizens to join the war effort. So many people left for the war and war industries that a national labor shortage of farm workers threatened the agricultural production in United States. Through a formal agreement with the Mexican government, the Bracero program was created to supply US agriculture with Mexican and Latin American labor during World War II. Described as a temporary labor program, the Bracero agreement brought in over 215,000 workers to the United States in the first five years. Mexico declared war and joined the Allies in 1942, one of only two Latin American countries to fight the Axis.Fast forward to modern day. Washington County has the largest Latino population north of Sacramento, California. This exhibition explores the first recorded influx of Mexican and Latino immigrants into Washington County, made possible through the Bracero program. The Museum hopes to broaden knowledge in the county about the Braceros and the achievements of Americans and Mexicans working together toward a common goal. Today, agriculture is still a major piece of the county’s economy. [Excerpt from site.]

On-the-job training is provided in all basic organizing skills. The volunteer opportunities vary depending on the time of year and the time availability and interest of the individual volunteer. In late October we need volunteers to make tamales. In November and December we have a series of events (food distributions, a 400 person family holiday party) in connection with our Holiday Campaign. For volunteers who put in the time for an organizer training program we take weekend long caravans to work directly with the organizations of farm, seasonal and service workers who we support.
