Professor (Spectroscopy Of Materials)Université Laval Jul 2012 - PresentQuébec CityI established my group in the Summer of 2012 with the goal of developing a new area of nano-bio based materials research, focusing on naturally occurring biofilms. By working together, microbes living in biofilms have become one of Earth's most successful living materials and have developed abilities to perform a surprising range of functions--from cleaning water to producing electricity. We aim to optimise the properties biofilm-based materials using microfluidics and to analyse them with advanced spectroscopic tools. Scientific AdviserFlowjem 2011 - PresentTorontoFlowJEM is a microfluidics start-up company based on microfabrication technologies I helped develop while a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Toronto. Microfluidics is opening new opportunities in life sciences, chemistry and materials. It is also a green technology, with the potential to revolutionize existing industrial processes due to fundamental enhancements to chemical efficiencies. While there is plenty of room in the rapidly growing microfluidics market, FlowJEM has the district advantage over other microfluidics companies in that it can rapidly fabricate custom designs in highly durable engineered plastics. I am volunteering to get this company off the ground, with technical advice and strategic planning. FlowJEM is looking for contributors who can bring skills and funds to help it grow.
