About Jesse Hebert
I have always been fascinated with how things work and to make them work better. My early passions of playing in the sandbox and digging tunnels through snow banks naturally led me to an early career in Mining Engineering. I soon realized that the mining industry was about more than digging holes - it is the origin of the items we use everyday. Since completing my undergrad, my interests in natural resources as a whole have flourished.Climate change is the defining challenge our of time. I've always wanted to do something meaningful to minimize its impact on our society, but in simply mining the metals we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, I felt too far away from the problem. Fortunately, while completing the Master of Energy and Energy Resources Leadership program at Queen's, I was introduced to the idea of a net-zero economy. Since then, I've been working tirelessly to tackle the hard-to-abate sectors like heavy-duty transportation and heavy industry. Please join my network if you dream big, like me.

Co-Founder & Coo
CurrentOCHIUS is developing technology to produce sustainable fuels at scale. Our flagship product is a synthetic diesel that will meet the world's most stringent diesel fuel specification: Europe's EN 590. We have also figured out how to make it net-zero on a full lifecycle basis. That means heavy-duty equipment operators can eliminate their lifecycle emissions, without having to change anything about the way they do business.
Mining Engineer Eit - Open Pit (Gold, Steel-Making Coal)
Stantec offers professional services across the mining lifecycle, from exploration to mine closure and reclamation. I've held a multidisciplinary role bringing value to clients both at the office and in the field. My focus in the office has been on the delivery of a feasibility study for a steel-making coal project near Tumbler Ridge, BC. My primary tasks involved site layout design, stockpile management planning, financial modeling, and reclamation planning and costing. This project has enhanced my ability to see a project as a whole, and identify seemingly insignificant design decisions that may have large impacts during reclamation.
Mining Engineer Eit - Underground (Gold)
BGM holds a large land package in central British Columbia where they are looking to revive a historic gold mining district. The Bonanza Ledge Mine is their first project in the pipeline and the first underground mine that I have worked in. The start-up nature of this project meant that there was a lot to do and few resources to get it done. This required me to take on more responsibility than would be expected for an EIT and allowed me to make significant contributions to various aspects of the ramp-up to production. In addition to fulfilling drill and blast, mine planning and infrastructure design requirements, among others, I also developed new skills in surveying, operations supervision and environmental management. This was the result of collaboration within the technical services department and with colleagues throughout the company. My experience with BGM has taught me how to manage multiple priorities and the importance of developing and adhering to a holistic mine plan for the life of the project.
Mining Engineer Eit - Open Pit (Gold, Silver)
During my time with GQM, the company was building the newest gold and silver mine in California. Using conventional open pit mining methods, I helped bring the Soledad Mountain Project into full production. Through collaboration with the geology and operations departments, we were able to double mining productivity with no reportable injuries while adhering to strict Californian regulations. I also worked with external consultants to develop and present the 5-year mine plan to various supervisors and management. My time with GQM strengthened my communication skills and helped me to understand the value of effective team work in achieving a common goal.
Operational Risk Management Eit
I was fortunate to be taken under the wing of a veteran in the Ontario mining industry upon graduating from university. After witnessing far too many preventable incidents in the workplace, my now mentor transitioned to consulting for this non-profit research and education firm in his retirement. The knowledge and wisdom I absorbed from him during my time with MIRARCO has shaped my current commitment to health and safety. We worked together to educate Ontario mining companies on the Global Minerals Industry Risk Management program, an internationally recognized certification. My involvement in the program led me to attain a Manager’s Level distinction. Through this position, I not only learned how to properly evaluate risk in a given context, but, more importantly, how to measure and assess the quality of the controls we put in place to manage hazards and prevent them from causing harm to our employees and communities.
