Training And Development Specialist
As the Training and Development Specialist at School on Wheels, I played a crucial role in enhancing the skills and knowledge of both staff and volunteers. My responsibilities included designing and implementing comprehensive training programs that addressed the specific needs of those working with families that were unhoused. I facilitated all Introductory Tutor Trainings and Advanced Tutor Trainings, developed innovative training materials, and led workshops. Additionally, I oversaw four different career paths for internal staff, ensuring their professional growth and development. Through my efforts, I helped foster a more effective and cohesive learning environment, ultimately contributing to the success and empowerment of the students served by School on Wheels.School on Wheels is an incredible organization and I enjoyed every project I was a part of. I reached a point in my career that I wanted to pursue a larger organization focusing on housing services instead of educational services. This led me to apply and start a new position at LA Family Housing.
Regional Coordinator
In this position, I directly supervised 100+ volunteer tutors throughout Hollywood, Echo Park, Highland Park, Pasadena, and Altadena. I coordinated their services between hundreds of students experiencing homelessness. I’ve led over 25 in-depth tutor trainings to empower volunteers in student advocacy, SEL practices, and creative engagement tactics. To increase retention rates, I celebrated our volunteers by organizing fun, interactive social appreciation events; both online and in-person. I strive to go above and beyond in my role by working across departments for School on Wheels’ success. Here are several examples of accomplishments outside my current role: Community Outreach Training (Creator & Facilitator): 2-hour workshop to train volunteers on tabling at community events for tutor recruitment, student resources, and donor cultivation. Workshop included a live action ‘table assembling’ activity and tabling kits for future events. In-Person Tutoring Pilot Project (Staff Lead): Currently, I supervise the health safety and academics of six tutors and 20 students on the rooftop of the Union Rescue Mission. In phase two of our return to in person tutoring, this is the only in-person group currently meeting and will serve as a model for future sites. Halloween Carnival (Event Planner): In 2019, a shelter partner in DTLA could not allow students off-site to trick or treat. With a team of volunteers, we crafted activities and costumes donated by materials I solicited from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. At the carnival, we hosted 3 game booths, 2 craft stations, and of course, lots of candy! Regional Team Email Templates (Creator): Generalized my day-to-day communication emails with tutors to be used as organizational templates for all Regional Coordinators."Green Team" Sustainability Committee (Leader)2020 Scholarship Committee (Member) & 2022 Scholarship Committee (Lead)
Community Engagement Coordinator
This position holds a very special place in my heart. If I hadn’t moved to California, I would still be working at the Rainbow Center. After I was contracted to manage special event projects, the Center experienced an increase in volunteer interest. I was then offered the Community Engagement Coordinator position to integrate volunteer support into the Center’s programming and events. Upon starting in this position, I conducted a needs assessment for the four internal departments: Training, Programming, Advocacy, and Development/Events. I used this data to develop specific volunteer positions that reduced the workload for staff and allowed for broader outreach strategies. My procedures for volunteer recruitment, interviewing, training, and placement created clear and concise avenues for community engagement. My greatest success in the position was utilizing volunteers to supplement over 75% of the 2018 Tacoma Pride Festival’s operational needs. I recruited over 80 volunteers to operate 20 stations over the course of our 6-hour Tacoma Pride event. These volunteers also supported the 8-hours worth of setup and takedown. This drastically reduced the amount of paid staff required to produce this large-scale event.
Special Events Production Lead
After volunteering with the Rainbow Center for two-years, the staff recognized my talent in organizing people and projects. I was contracted to create and manage the development of large-scale event decorations. Along with beautiful auction and stage decor, I delivered detailed budget reports with itemized purchases. I reduced the overall cost of production by rallying 30 volunteers to complete decorations over the course of 15 social craft events. Working with two designers, we created outdoor art installations and selfie stations for the Tacoma Pride Festival in 2016, 2017, and 2018. For the Rainbow Center’s 15th annual Black & White Gayla, we crystallized the Tacoma Convention Center with hundreds of handmade paper crystals, over 50 glowing rainbow centerpieces, four 9’ crystal towers, and a 3-dimensional chrome unicorn installation that was then auctioned off for over $800.
Certified Peer Counselor
Working at Catholic Community Services was a strenuous, yet rewarding experience for me. I applied for the job during the first year of my social work undergrad program. Upon being hired as a Youth Partner, I completed the training and exams to become a Certified Peer Counselor. I was able to use my own experiences to mentor and support those seeking mental health services. I managed a caseload of 10 youth experiencing mental health crises, juvenile system involvement, and/or substance abuse. I met some bright, creative kids who also experienced intense amounts of trauma at an early age. I was able to support them during extremely challenging situations like court hearings, in-patient hospitalization, overnight suicide watch, and experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. This position drastically developed my interpersonal skills as I communicated with youth, parents, social service providers, and clinical colleagues while respecting both HIPAA and confidentiality agreements.
Assistant Manager
My first job, prior to Espresso 4 U, was at a sandwich shop in the same parking lot. The owner of Espresso 4 U offered me a job after noticing I was the only employee that took the time to clean the outside of the sandwich shop. I was responsible for opening the coffee shop, training new baristas, counting cash deposits, creating and managing the staff calendar. I also managed the Espresso 4 U promotions on Facebook.
