I first learned about civil engineering when I was a young child, mainly from my dad when he would tell us all about his crazy experiences and how he got to design lots of interesting things. As I got older, I began to learn more about the profession and eventually decided to major in Civil Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.Although I have taken plenty of courses related to civil engineering, it wasn't until I had begun my first internship that I began to experience engineering "in the real world." My 2 summer internships helped me connect the information I learned in school with the reality of designing and completing a project, and I was able to further develop my skills using programs such as AutoCAD, Civil3D, and Microsoft Excel. These first glimpses into the profession of civil engineering have shown me how much more I have yet to learn, but were just as exciting as they were challenging. Now that I am in my professional career, I have been able to learn further about the roles and duties of a civil engineer. While I enjoyed learning about the technical side of engineering through school, the public service aspect of civil engineering has ultimately been the foundation for why I find satisfaction in my work. I strive to make every calculation and observation while keeping my goal of helping the general public in mind.
